This seems like a very one sided conversation, but does contain a lot of truth, albeit some of it more theoretical than practical and/or provable. Fortunately I'm over 50 and can't hear a thing beyond 15kHz. I remember as a teenager when my hearing really did extend over 19kHz, I could just barely detect the difference when the 15kHz "FM" filter of my Dynaco preamp was switched in. Though some of the time I thought it was my imagination. Different equipment, including cables, does sometimes sound different, but for readily understandable reasons covered in Electronics 101. Ok, maybe 102. IMO, the real problems are what they've always been- recordings, room acoustics, and speakers. Why is it that when I buy an expensive "remastered" version of some album I like, it usually sounds terrible. Laura Nyro is a prime example- the CDs have no bottom end at all, whereas the LP has a full balanced sound. On other CDs, the tracks seem identical to the earlier non-remastered versions. I have some really great sounding CDs, some that yield nothing to an LP. I also have many that are just awful. My own transfers from LP to CD, with a bit of processing, sound every bit as good as the LP. My living room has some terrible "suck-outs", and trucks driving by can be as bad as LP noise. Compared to these problems, subtle differences are not worth losing sleep over, and many of the things people talk about are symptoms of bad engineering, or are things that a double blind test will prove are all in their heads. I do try to be polite and not point out exactly what those things are, well most of the time, as you are quite right- it's all about enjoyment and I don't want to take the fun out of it for anybody.

It's a bit scarier than that. I'm seeing a two-sided conversation between one person.

I don't know ssmith very well, but I do know that the Greenspun stuff has been around a while and is quite well-known. The problem is that there's a lot of incorrect, half-true, and misleading stuff in these postings, too, which I tried to elliptically point out.

It's hard to tell what was Phillip's and what wasn't.
