Any one know of a distibuter for small quantity cores for power transformer applications? Or is it possible to de-laminate an already assembled transformer?
Go to www.thomasregister.com and search "transformer laminations"
Here is one.
Lams are always a pain to get in small quantites.
Look for "transformers and/or winding" in your yellow pages as well. They may recommend someone.
I can call my winder on Monday if you have no luck. There are alot of small distributors but they don't advertise well.
Most transformers are vacuum impregnated with varnish to shut them up. You can get them apart... soak them in a closed container for a few days in toluene (laquer thinner), xylene, or MEK. The MEK causes cancer in California.

Spang Magnetics is a great bunch of people... the 3rd link posted above by jlsem.
They will hustle samples, gapped cores etc... out in a hurry.

Arnold and Magnetics Inc. seem to have the largest selections. I have never dealt with them directly, but most of the exotic alloy and high quality oriented steel cores I have gotten from stripping surplus military transformers and from eBay have been manufactured by these two companies.

This is what you want, http://www.alphacore.com/ocore.htm
They usually have price for 1, but now I see price for 10 only. But they are cheap enough that you can afford 10 easily.

the problem with O and toroid cores is that they are impractical for the home winder. Unless your building a switch mode power supply. Although, perhaps a smps isn't a bad idea🙂

I've contected these people before and was quoted a minumum order of 1,000 Kg

You've just given me a fabulous idea.... thanks!

Lets say a friend of mine asked them for a quote on buying some lams. In the quote they said they needed his shipping address. Well about a week later all 33lbs are sent to him for free. Nothing has been heard from them since. They either sell lams by the ton or are forgetful 🙂
