but I'm actually trying to source something better than the 78XX series.
I guess a fixed 15V version of LT's 3-pin regs (or any low dropout voltage regs for that matter) would be right on the money.

Presuming HQ means High Quality, try the 78T15 (eg. motorola part MC78T15CT). Much better sonics than a 7815, it's also 4 time the price.
What about LM317/337 ? If you want low drop LM1086-ADJ is OK. Avoid buying the fixed versions: they are twice as expensive or even more.

Hmm, I couldn't even hesitate a guess as to why. My statement is based on some subjective tests we conducted last time I built some equipment over 10 years ago.

The datsheet indicates a 80 dB ripple rejection ans less overshoot on line and load transients. In fact the data are just as good as a LM317 with bypassed adjustment pin.🙂
