Hello.

I just registered to diyaudio.

I have a few questions about a blown Soundstream Reference 500.

I have had that amp for over 5 or 6 years now but i never had the time to actually look forward repairing it.

Back when i was a young boy i purchased that amp and a pair of Rockford 12" Punch HE.
I installed it myself i was 13 at the time, i was stupid and used household wires (those with thick copper) to connect the amp from the battery, sad part is that i also ran the negative wire all the way to the battery.

Nonetheless the amp "asploded" 2 or 3 months after (i always blamed the negative wire for that), now i realize how stupid i was for blowing up such an old school amp so no need to bash me over that , i already punched myself several times.

Ok, my question is, based on your experience, is it worth the repair?, is the damage for this kind of abuse repairable (little damage) or beyond repair (lots of damage).

I opened the amp and so far i can see several burned transistors, many resistors and i think thats all.

Hope you can help me out, i would like to revive that amp if its possible.

Thanks and have a great day!.

You have probably blown the power supply. Post a picture of the board so we can all have a look. Try and get close up photos of the damage.

I would say any amp you like or would like to use is worth repairing as long as its not an amp with discontinued parts or extremely hard to find parts.

Please look up Perry Babin and click on his links below on his signature and read the basic amp repair tutorial, its very informative.
