Soundstream D200

The best systems at the place I was at we ran Linear Power, but Soundstream on tweeters, RF subs, Yamaha mids, Philips tweeters, mostly Kenwood HU like the 999/9900/etc. We carried Stillwater boxes, RF amps, Pioneer, and some others. I don't remember if they had them but my friends also ran Pyle subs, they were great subs then. Friend of mine still has an old Pyle amp.

Perry,

I have two D100 Series One amps and I actually would be interested in finding a service manual for them. Do you have any idea if one is available? I am also wondering if it makes sense to replace the electrolytic power supply caps before they fail in a 20 year old amplifier.

Does the lack of service manuals for the early D100 and D200 amps have anything to do with protecting proprietary information?

I don't know why the originals D100/200 isn't available. It's likely due to the fact that there wasn't an easy way to distribute them (not much internet access at that time).

The small electrolytic caps are likely out of tolerance. Out of the ones I've repaired all of the large rail caps were within tolerance. When you remove the capacitors, look for corrosion. If there is any residue under the capacitor, clean the board thoroughly.

The Old D series, (Non II) had a small supply when compared to the newer II series. If it were me...I would build 2 supplies. one for each channel as in true dual mono. each with larger PSU caps. should tighten up the bass a bit. I wouldn't want to go to much farther but it might be interesting to try adding regulation to the supplies. but that might kill the dynamics??

The ADS PQ amps always sounded lifeless to me. We compared them to the SS amps way way back when and the SS just had more life to them. the PQ's just sounded...compressed is probably the best way to describe it.

The HK CA260's were awesome amps. always wanted one but never was able to afford one. and at that time the other contender in the market was the Carver car amp that was supposed to have been pretty good. i heard many guys run the carvers on the lows and the HK's on top. and there was the CA240 the lil bro to the 260 and even one smaller yet. was it the 220?? something like that, but the 260 was the bad boy of the day!

The Linear power amps. had TONS of power, great for subs but i never liked them for FR/Mid/HI

I had an Alpine HU (this is the 2 shaft cassette days) and the alpine 11 (or was it 7) band EQ/Amp and a pair of AFS Kriket 6x9's in my 72 mach1 and it sounded damn good when the engine wasn't running(so you could actually hear it). I miss those days. ahh the long lost days of "Mix Tapes" HA! Kids these days...don't know what they missed.

That is a pretty simple text book amp circuit. and all discrete! newer amps are chock full of op-amps and surface mount crap and yuck. simple, clean, using pretty generic parts as well. A42/92 small signal transistors and TIP 142/147 outputs.

OHHH looking at the PSU schematic maybe the power supplies already were dual mono. been a long time....But only 2200uf of cap per rail. I bet you could double that without killing the rectifiers or the rest of the supply. I think i would first take a good look at the supply under load and see what could be done there without going too terribly overboard.

You could also try adding a 1000uf cap & bypass right near the output transistors and see if that helps any. would be interesting to play around with.
