sound stabilizar for home theater

Hello,

This is my first visit to the HT forum.

I've been noticing a problem with a volume stabilizer box I got from Sima Corp years ago. The box is supposed to do what the 'midnight theater' setting on some tv's does: stabilize or normalize the volume level to prevent loud portions from being disruptive.

I hooked the box up to my motherboard sound out and to my small audio receiver: a Yamaha RP U 100.

I have not noticed that the Sima box does anything with this setup: loud parts are really load even the high setting.

Are there newer products to provide some sound stabilization for an existing
hifi receiver to computer setup?
