Hi
After many years not in use, I‘ve tried to play a tape. The recorder powers on, take the cassette but does not play. It shows the play function but stops after two seconds.
It‘s now powered on for one hour and I would be very happy for a hint to proceed first without dismantling the recorder ;-)

I suspect you won't be able to do much without at least a partial strip down. First thought has to be a mechanical issue such as a take up spool not turning (belt/clutch/idler issue).
There are a few videos on YouTube if you search for them but be warned that working on anything like this is highly specialised. I've never worked on DAT but in many ways it is similar to servicing camcorders... helical scan and all. Its like working on a microscopic VHS deck.

Thank you Mooly, yes, I know how to clean U-matic recorders but these Walkmans are a different playground. Will check the U-tube for information.
btw. The motor, who takes the tape to the idler and the head, can be heard, when applying play function.
