Sony TA-N86

Quick question, is the Sony TA-N86 a v-fet amp? I see reference to a High-ft transistor, but I am not sure what that is?

Seems to be 2SC2398, 2SA1028, so BJTs.

It has a bipolar output stage. 2SC2398/2SA1028.

High fT just means they are "fast" I think (capable of gain at high frequency). But I expect they're nothing special by today's standards.

Detinitely not. If it had vfets, it would be advertised on the front.
Its normal bjt amp, there is service manual on hifiengine.

Yes. The TA-N88, which is a class D design with an SMPS (19-70's!), has lots of VFETs in it.

It is also almost always defect when you get one.

I own one (N86). Had to repair a channel (both C2398-A1028 molten). No Vfets.
High-ft promise high 'frequeny-turnover'? No Fo given in the lookup, but Ccb some 240- 370pF resp.
Other Sony's has Vfets (8650 series), hard to get or broken.

Thanks guys!! It's what I suspected. The 88 is never around and a definite cautious purchase for the reasons mentioned. I guess it's the first generation and N7B/F7B that are the only Sony V-Fets.

I'm looking for a good solid state amp north of 60 watts for my Yamaha NS-1000M. The Yamaha B2's that people are selling are for high prices and half of them are in spotty condition. I need a good amp that is a just a nudge on the warm side of neutral that has good transients and deep soundstage. I would build a First Watt but they are lower powered, except for the F5T (which is a big investment).

The new Purifi amp is of interest, but it might be too much of a neutral thing, but I haven't heard it or any Hypex amp.

Maybe a beefed up bridged Pass may suffice?
I go for Hiraga's: there's a solid 30W version around, so in bridge that would do 120W?

I'll first have a look at the circuit. Never viewed any Pass design sofar.
If it can be bridged, in theory it would be four times a single.
