I will begin this post with a confession, I have never tried anything like this before and although mechanically minded, I am very frightened by electrical things! Therefore when my terminology is wrong and I ask stupid questions feel free to laugh.
I have a beautiful old Sony TA-1055 which I do want to keep. Recently, the right hand volume controller has gone all crazy (technical term). If I slide the control, the volume does not change although a very faint sound remains. I have swapped the speakers so I know it is not them.
I guess I need to replace the thing that controls the volume but....what does it look like and where do I find it and (most importantly) could someone of my electrical skill potentially kill them self undertaking this challenge?
cheers

Sliders are notorious for suffering from this. First thing to try is some switch contact cleaner and spray it into the opening of the slider, then slide the control back and forth a few times to distribute the cleaner.
If this does not work however, then finding a replacement slide potentiometer will be tricky to start with, and it is most certainly a job requiring considerable experience to repair.

Thanks Jaycee,
I shall try spraying it (I think that is within my skill set) then maybe off to the experts. Do the usual shops still provide a repair service or do i need to find a specialist. If so, can anyone tell me someone good here in Brisbane?
cheers

You need to 100% sure the control is at fault.
Yes they go intermitant and noisy, but your description is of permanently low sound. Is there no change in sound at all as you move the slider.
Is the fault the same on any input ?
Do you have a multimeter (and know how to use it 🙂)

I just checked it, there is a change in the volume from nothing to very faint (at max volume). Yeah i have a multimeter and NO I don't know how to use it (short of checking voltage and perhaps ohms!!). I could perhaps manage to use it under strict instructions.
