Hi guys. My name is Bill and I am a new vintage stereo junkie. Currently I have just two vintage units- A Sansui 5000A that I adore, and a recent addition of a Sony 6550. I know I am a junkie already because I want to stop at every garage and estate sale I come across, much to my wife's chagrin. I have always been an audio guy and have a lot of experience with electronics, including car stereo installation, home theatre sales/installs, and computer repair.
Now that I have a small introduction out of the way I do have a question for you guys. I have a guy that repaired my Sansui when I first got it. I had one channel out and it sounded like my pots needed to be gone through. He did a wonderful job and charged my nearly nothing. So when I got the Sony I hooked it up once to see if it would power and then sent it off to him to look at. I got it returned to me saying that he had seen the unit before and that it was not able to be fixed.
When I did power it on when I first got it I did get sound from both channels, however it was what I would consider "muddy" and unclear. It wasn't loud at all, and was fuzzy. The problem occurred in both FM mode and the AUX mode. I am guessing its an issue with the amplipher, but I am really green at this. I did find the service manual on line that lists all parts and their replacements if needed, and how to preform most tests.
My question is what does it sound like could be the problem? Unfortunately a friend picked up my receiver so I did not talk to the technician myself, and have no other info to give. My friend was going to ask him the next time he sees him, so I might know later. If you do know what the problem might be, is it possible that I could fix it with the service manual. I am very handy, and have a very large interest in electronics, but my knowledge is limited. Thanks, and I hope I didn't do anything taboo by introducing myself and asking a question in my first post. I mean no disrespect. Thanks!!
