When the unit plays for some time, especially on a hot day, the radio sound goes completely bananas. Any id what this could be? Looked inside and measured the voltage rails but did not find anything weird. The MD section works ok most of the times but I remember it having gone nuts also sometimes.
Does anybody have a schematic/diagramm of this unit?

Hi Bgt
I don't know if this applies to your problem but your'e not too specific about the problem with the radio going "bananas".
The fact is I had a problem with mine when I first installed in
the car, it would cut off intermitently.
Took to the Sony service center (twice) and nothing happened
the problem would subsist, until I decide to fix it myself even though at the service center they "replaced" an IC "that was
causing the problem".
To make the story shorter, after resoldering the board and
checking the obvious, I finally found the problem, it was a
speaker terminal touching the ground of the car intermitently.
A simple problem that could have been resolved in a snap and
took a couple of months.
Moral of this story, check the obvious, make sure that speaker wires are well dressed and not touching anything, grounding
problems are the worse to find.
Good luck

what I meant with the tuner going bananas is that the sound get very distorted like a station which is not properly tuned. On cold days this does not happen that often. What could this be?
I can't tell you what the problem is, but if you have an e-mail address with room for approx 5Mb, then at least i can help you with a complete service-manual.
It seems to be a heat related problem. Does it play ok CD (or cassette)? If it does the problem is only in the tuner, this way you
can isolate the malfunction to the tuner (or not).
Some IC that's getting hot scrambles the tuning all together.
Sincerely I would take to a Sony service center, even though I always have problems with them, no matter what. But at least
they know (or should) their own stuff.
Good luck
