by reading the datasheet of SONY KSS-213Q/C about
http://www.datasheetarchive.com/datasheet-pdf/040/DSA00105113.html (KSM-213QCS)
http://www.datasheetarchive.com/datasheet-pdf/040/DSA00105111.html (KSM-213-CDM)
and Samsung CMS-B33SG6/CMS-B35BG6 about

more exactly I discover different laser diodes listed on the datasheets (look also to the attachement, if the links don't goes open):

1) SONY SLD104U
no datasheet - only for the successors -
SLD104U datasheet, SLD104U datasheets, SLD104U datenblatt, SLD104U manual, SLD104U data sheets, SLD104U pdf - ALLDATASHEET.COM
2) SONY SLD-104AGL
no datasheet to find
3) ROHM RLD-78MA
http://www.datasheetcatalog.org/datasheet/rohm/rld-78ma.pdf
ROHM Begins Industry's First Full-Scale Mass Production of CD Laser Diode in Plastic Package with Metal Shell.
4) Sharp LT022MS
LT022MS datasheet and Application Note, Data Sheet, Circuit, PDF, Pinout | Datasheet Archive

This makes me a little confused, because the outline of the last both is normal issue (M-260) and that one of first both from SONY is very special and only to find by SONY laser diodes (M259-Outline).

For me now there are the follow questions:
1) Wich type provides the highest life expectancy ?
2) Are there an influence to the kind of the internal management for the light beam between this two different outlines of diodes?
Sony's M-259 outline means an angle of 30 degrees against the reference plane (see datasheet)

Thank you very much for any advices.

Now I have found any informations of the very special outline of SONY's SLD laser diodes for compact disc players:
The light beam exit (front of the M-259 housing) is angled (30 degrees) so that the exit window (anti-reflection coated) is mounted at the same angle to prevent any remaining reflections from the window's surfaces - as small as the are - from feeding back into the laser diode's envelope or interfering with the detected signal. The output of these edge emitting laser diodes is polarized. This angle is the so called "Brewster Angle"

Brewster Window - read more about this there:

But now I understand even less, how can it be, that different laser diodes
be used in the same laser-unit.

thank you for reply. Now i know about type a diode:) I have a new ksa-123a and i remove o laser diode to check broken ksa123a. In old ksa 123a diode is a to-5(9mm), in new ksa123a is a smole one diode to-18 (5,6mm) glued to adapter5,6mm to 9mm.I will bay a smole dide and pick to ksa123a.thank you for help:) Peter

Any success? Would be interesting to know, wether an "upgrade" was easy.
Seems like the KSS-123A is not as good as other types. Bought a lot of players on ebay using KSS-123A, (sony and a Denon DCD-1700) they were all not good in error correction. A Sony CDP-40, which is / was stated using KSS-123 in the DAC-Transport list, uses a KSS-120C. (P-Sub version) Lasers look absolutely identical at first look, but KSS-120 tracks much better.(Assuming the circuitry is the same. I compared a CDP-40 to a CDP-203 both built around `85 and using the same chipsets ad transport mechanism)
But P-Sub and N-Sub make no difference at all according to reliability?

Just to add some info to this great thread: I have replaced a KSS-213QCS with a KSS-213CCM, it is a direct replacement and works perfectly - highly recommended for all Chinese CDPs that carry the QCS variant - the CCM has much better build quality and will probably last longer.
Cheers,
Yair

Such observations I have make, too. On the other hand, there are many different manufacturers in China, Indonesia, Taiwan, Mexico and Malaysia, which now produce the SONY CD mechanism (many identical models) and for much other brands. Unfortunately we don't know the information which manufacturers produce good quality here and which less good.
Furthermore, one usually detects not know if it is a distributor or a manufacturer - see the following URLs:

By the replacement laser heads and CD mechanism I have never see a specific logo of one from this manufacturers.
In this case I have start this thread some months ago but without helpful replies:

If Chinese would been my native language, I would find out this very quickly, since most manufacturers located in China.
In case of Philips CDM12 here are fo find some informations -
http://www.cndiyclub.com/bbs/read.php?tid=14464
certainly about sony KSS parts and their manufacturers exist similar threads in this language.
