Hi
I am in the process of recapping an old Sony CDP 970, I got all the parts, except
one, there is a 47mF 5,5 volt cap on the board, can I use a goldcap to replace that? If not where do I find this replacement cap?
Thanks for any help...
Tojoko.

47mF (millifarad) sounds like a backup cap to keep the volatile memory alive.
Yes, you can use a Goldcap type backup cap, the value is not critical at all. It would be worth finding out what it backs up. If it is just user settings then there is no problem but make sure it doesn't back up mission critical service data/settings.
That would certainly be unusual in a CD player but worth mentioning.

Recapping Sony CDP 970
Hi
How do I find out if the cap stores system relevant data or just programmed user data?
In a Sony ES series from 1990 I saw a gold cap, it was only for user programmed data.
I guess when I replace it and it does not work anymore...it was system relevant data that was stored...
Cheers, Tojoko.

By doing research 🙂 A good clue would be looking at any set up procedures and seeing if they use traditional presets or is it done via a service remote and data stored in memory.
Fwiw, it almost certainly is OK to swap the cap, but it would be remiss of me not mention that just sometimes it is used for other data besides user stuff.
