I just got hold of a Sony CDP-502ES II and imho it dusts alot of modern cd players not just in sound but in build quality, these Sony's were built to last, I dont reckon the big companys could even afford to make em like this nowadays.
Anyhow I'll get to the point having bought a few bits and bats of old Sony gear, most recently a TA-F55, I like to pop the top off and check bias and the likes, however whilst inside the F55 I happened to notice the stabilizer glue around some caps and cables had gone dark brown, it was also touching component legs and a few wire jumpers, well the wire jumpers looked to have corroded, so I was in with the meter checking the jumpers were ok, Further poking about around the stabilizer compound now realizing I'm getting readings between that and the wire jumpers, not good!! especially in am amp, no wonder the bias was jumping around erratically.
This stabilizer glue is(was) also around caps, resistors & wire jumpers in the CDP-502 it too had gone conductive?
It seems like with age this nasty stabilizer "GLOOP" goes hygroscopic/Conductive!! my advice is remove all traces of it before it does any permanent damage.
Having removing it from the amp, It certainly must have been causing a problem as i could now set the bias without it jumping from one extreme to the other.
It could be snake oil but the 502 just sounds better without the nasty gloop too.
Take care of your old Sony's and remove the "GLOOP" !!!

It is (or was) an industry wide problem I'm afraid. Tuner drift in many a TV and VCR was attributable to this type of glue.
