Sonus Faber's ported midranges

Both the SF Cremona & Amati have ported midranges.

Anyone know why SF would use this alignment for the 6.5/7"" Scanspeak mid?

I think they use 1st order for their xo. Could this be a reason or is there something about the SS drivers that would benefit from this porting?

There could be any number of reasons. One that comes to mind is that SF can achieve a 5th-order high-pass filter with just a capacitor and the mechanical filtering of the ported enclosure (1st order + 4th order). Otherwise they would either have to put up with 3rd or 2nd-order filtering in a sealed box, or use a much more complex crossover circuit. I would personally stay with a sealed midrange and avoid the mechanical and functional nuisance of a port. I'd rather build a more complicated passive crossover, or even better: an active crossover.
