Sony TA 9000 ES preamp no sound
I have a TA 9000 ES and it has the classic well known issue of - no sound.
Anyway, I am pretty sure its the power supply board issue - cos there is a faint burn mark on top. Probably an SMD under it has gone to heaven.
I am looking @ schematic and service bulletins. I see this -

That link has an image, and my burn mark is right where R124 is supposed to be.
My question is, would I have to replace Q108 and Q109 as well, or can those 2 live with R124 dying.
Cool.

Symptom :
No Sound.
Cause :
Oscillation may cause Q108, Q109 and R124 to break down.
Solution :
Apply the following changes on the Power Board.
1. add a 100pF capacitor (1-163-117-11) in parallel with R153.
2. Replace R124 with 4.7k, 1W resistor (1-215-873-11)

That's the full on manual. Page 51 has the circuit I am looking at.
Thanks.

I would replace all the mentioned parts. Sony knows best.
Getting to Q108 and 109 promises to be a regular nightmare.
The adding and replacing those 2 cap and resistor are easy from the underside. Not the q108/109. OK let me pull it and try and test it.
Cool.

R124 is burnt to a crisp. Its actually beyond crisp, its disintegrated.
However that is all the damage there was.
I have to now find a SMD 4.7K 1 watt resistor. Yikes.
Anyway the R153 I am unable to find on the board.
Anyway the search continues.

I cant find R153 on the board yet, and no 100 pf has turned up in my stash yet. However I found 4.7K ohm in my stash, but 2 watt or 1/2 watt - no 1w. 2w is too bulky to fit in that smd location. I am thinking 1/2 watt would work, cos the original was a 1/10 th watt.
Still on the trail of that 100 pf.
Cool.

I have 2.01 firmware.
The 100pf cap across R153 - Is it ceramic ? or electrolytic ? And what voltage ?
I hope it is my issue and gets fixed with these mods. This pre doesn't have dim lights in front, just no ssound and burnt R124. Hope it fixes it. I cant imagine the transistors are bad. I hope not. I will swap the R124 and put in the 100pf and try it. Swapping the transistors need the whole thing to be taken apart.
Cool.
