Wait, wait. When I hurry, I make mistakes. Example is for 15" bass (Sd=845 cm2). Buggles. I must estimate another for 18".
Example for 18" bass, SPL=89 dB:
Sd=1134 cm2
Re=6.3 Ohm
BL=21.6 N/A
Fs=15 Hz
Qms=4.416
Qes=0.345
Qts=0.32
Mms=271 gr
Cms=0.415 mm/N
Vas=748 L
and
Vb=240 L
Fb=18 Hz
Dt=160 mm
Lt=635 mm
😀
I think the BL might be higher, the VC alone is 6 inches in diameter and 8 inces tall. Its a monster.
Maybe. Bigger BL, bigger Mms for same SPL. Watch this. 😀
Sd=1134 cm2
Re=6.3 Ohm
BL=26.5 N/A
Fs=15 Hz
Qms=4.416
Qes=0.345
Qts=0.32
Mms=398 gr
Cms=0.283 mm/N
Vas=509 L
P.S. Little observation. Someone can say that for same Qts and different Vas cant be the same Vb, but simulation are one thing, but in real it is not just like that. Long story.

Cool, if it's not to much off-topic, I do have the time 😉Long story.

Great. This is tread about that.
corrections of T/S
So heres a curious question. Why do people build these sonosubs? What is it about them that allows them to make so much noise? I mean, isnt it just like building one very big box? Does the tube shape help amplify bass or is it just the fact that you can make these extremely large enclosures very cheap with sonotube vs. birch ply or mdf. Also, are they any good for music too, becasue thats essentially what mine will be used for. I mean, my current floorstanding speakers go down to about 35 hz very well so I dont need much high end bass, but I'm wondering if they are more "boom box" style for movies or if they are fast enough for double bass and things like that.
Thanks guys,
Devin

Oh and a funny story. I just got off the phone with Snell, and they basically told me the reason I can't find the T/S Parameters is becasue they never release them. They are a closely guarded secret that nobody knows about except the engineers. ANYWAY, he told me that audioexpress.com had an issue reviewing an NCA laboratories model 18500 woofer. Anybody ever heard of it? Apparently its similat to the SUB1800's I have. Also, does anybody actually have the October 1999 issue or know a way to get one? Apparently its on page 17 of that issue.
So, does anybody know of a somewhat standard size of sonotube i could use for 2 of these 18 inch drivers? I'm assuming I'll need 24 inch sonotube, maybe something like 72 inches tall? I figure I'll just make the sonotube, throw them in and be happy with it.

Sonotube is a really cheap, easy way to build a transmission line speaker.CARTRulz said:So heres a curious question. Why do people build these sonosubs?
Hi Cartrulz, The info you are looking for is in the Oct 99 issue of Voice Coil magazine. The driver model is the NCA labs 18500.
Unfortunately I dont have a copy of it but thought this might help your search.
I did find a review of the Snell SUB1800 in the July 95 issue of Stereophile that has some useful info.
The enclosure is 45"x21.5"x16.5" for an estimated volume of 7cubic ft.
The nearfield measurements show flat response to 20hz and it appears the port is tuned to 17hz.
Hope that helps.

Not sure how they would/could guard against a resistor, sine wave generator, meter and calculator...

Ok so I'm abandoning the Snells and switching to something else. The RLP-15's are looking very promising, possible paired with a BASH 500 watt amp each. I'm still looking at sonosubs as they seem extremely powerful, but I'm still not completely clear on some things. They are considered transmission line subwoofers? If so, why haven't I ever seen calculations concerning TL's? I've only seem sonosubs designed as standard vented enclosures.
Also, would there be any problem having 2 drivers in a single tube? Like one on top, and one on the bottom with a port.
I've got a bunch of ideas for building so sonstruction shouldn't be a problem at all, I'm just a little shakey on measurements and modeling.
Thanks guys

You can make a sonotube tl if you want to. But it would have to be skinny and long. Not too much bigger around than the driver and 14 feet long for 20 hz tuning. It's been done lots of times but it's probably not as popular as vented sonotube subs.

Why? You already have the drivers which appear to be from a well respected design. Is there something here I'm missing?
Mark
yeah the pro audio to home audio didnt work out for me no matter what i tried and what i followed. It was probably a defective EQ but whatever. Plus one of the Snell's blew out, so I'm gonna switch to a driver with known T/S params that will be brand new, I hate buying used equipment.
Everything that could be returned has been, and I'm looking to start fresh. Im thinking RLp-15's in a sonotube enclosure with 500watt BASH plate amps.
Any Ideas?
Also, I was wonderin if you get more output by having 2 drivers in separate enclosures or having both in a bigger enclosure. Thanks for the tips guys.

Gee, that's too bad. Must have been some serious power going through that sub for it to blow.
The RLP's are very good quality. I'm sure you will be happy with those if you picked them up. The BASH amp as gotten nothing but raves here so I wouldn't hesitate if I were you.
IMO, keep the subs separate. Not so much for sound quality, but increased options for placement in your room.
Oh, and if you want to dump that Snell sub, let me know. 😉

Haha actually yeah, its listed on Ebay right now under Snell SUB1800 Subwoofer Driver. Check it out. I know its an astounding driver but I just dont have the knowledge/experience/patience to put it to good use.
Thanks for all the help,
Devin
