Sonos, Bose, ... speaker design

This is interesting. I had a first gen Sonos Play 5. I found it very uninspiring. It had a nice sound, but lacked detail and involvement. I have replaced it with a diy unit (fed by Sonos) incorporating 2x EAD E60 fullrange drivers in a FAST configuration supported by 2x Tang Band W5-1138. This system still needs improvement with the XO, yet it is still much more rewarding than the Play 5. I can hear all the different backing singers now.

I can see this type of system being very popular for the masses seeking a more premium offering, compared to the cheap junk most households have. In saying that what I mean is the majority of homes nowadays either have cheap crappy ipod mp3 player docking station sound systems, or value priced home theater type sound systems.. Also add in the fact that most females of the household want tiny low impact stereo systems nowadays (not the multiple cabs all over the place of a HT system), plus couple that with small town home/condo living, low footprint and visual etc etc, and you have a winner with this type of design.

I guess if a company can come up with a serious product challenge to what draw's the average mass customer to Bose, adding all the modern connection options with no wires or big cabs to deal with, then make it sound half decent comparably and there you have it.

Most homes I've been in the kids/teens have cheap wal mart ipod type stereos or computer speakers as their sound systems, and the adults are not really faring much better either.
