thanks - those look sweet 🙂

you worked for them? you evil evil man 😉
I live about 3 minutes by car from them and I can see them from a window in my home. needless to say I am not happy with it. only god knows how they got away with building it about 2 times as high as the original plans that were approved.

I'm just selling my house right now, I hope I can move some place I don't have to see that monster!

thanks for the info, if you have some links that you can post i will thank you very much! i am very new here and don't know really know much about the forum lingo... i guess i'll be going to seach in the forums now 🙂 there is so much to read...

oh, any i want to upgrade and box and the connectors and the potentiometer as well.. it will add up to $50 i guess

ok i'll go with the Fullrange W3-871S Monitors.
i just ordered all the parts and i will get the wood for the cabs tomorrow. i'll post pics when it's done 🙂

will be the first pair of "hi-fi" speaker i ever build. all guitar speaker cabs this far.

i want to ask a few things:

1. what wire should i use for connecting the notch filter to the fullrange drivers? i was thinking about solid copper core with silver plating. maybe 30 - 33awg? same will work for connecting the speakers to the amp, right?

2. after you made the box for the speaker and the last part that goes in is the back, how do you attach or glue it place so it will be air tight?

According to the building instructions on vikash's site, the side panel goes on last, not the back!

It's simply glued on and held in place with clamps.

As for cable, any suggestions here are sure to open a big can of worms, so I'll give you my opinion and dive for cover!

I'd use ordinary figure of eight speaker cable of a fairly standard thickness, or two core mains cable. I certainly wouldn't go to the expense of anything containing silver. Oxygen free copper would even be pushing the boat out as far as I'm concerned. Same for cable runs to your amp.

I reckon in your application, with the lengths required, there would be no appreciable difference between ordinary cable and expensive stuff. There may be an advantage to using silver cable for long cable runs at low power as cable resistance starts to make a difference, and the silver is a better conductor, particularly at high frequencies.

Feel free to use whatever you like though.😉

damn this DIY thing... I want to build everything in the same time and that would be a bad idea since i won't finish a single project 🙂

for this time though, I'll just go with the "original" design since I need the speakers to be on a bookshelf and not on the floor. the next project will be a hi-fi chip amp and for that I'll surly build some BIG floor standing speakers.

Thanks for everyone's input. I'm inclined to go the full-range driver route (at this point it look like it will be a 6" Fostex), but the box is still an issue. Looking at the Fostex site and what's been discussed in this forum, transmission line would be the best solution for a low power amp and full-range driver.

That said, I was intrigued by a review I saw on 6moons about the Grande 6 by Omega Speaker Systems (http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/omega/grande6_3.html). It uses a full range Fostex in a vented cabinet, 18" H x 8.5" W x 13" D. In general, does anyone know if Omega is doing anything unique with their cabinets? I surprised that their able to get enough bass out of a cabinet this size especially when Fostex is pushing for a transmission line.

It's a real ugly monolith isn't it? When I asked him why he did it, he told me (jokingly) not to mention it and that it was his worst mistake in forty years!

Anyway, I use CAT5e internet cable for all my wiring, inside and outside of components, and it works very well for me. Very cheap too.

Don't worry, opinions on Zaph's design are generally very favourable and you should have an excellent pair of small speakers for your money. If you have a small room bass should be more noticeable anyway.

Hmmm! The first paragraph of that review says it all! 300 dollars extra for some fancy connectors, wiring and some goop spread on the inside of the cabinet!

I've built quite a few speakers now and I would go for the transmission line over the BR because it's just not quantity of bass that is important but quality too! TL's may be a bit larger but IMHO, they are well worth it. 😉

i didn;t mean zaph's design isn't good, i just meant that it lacks bass. I used them with a small sub under my desk.

At some point I noticed I didn;t really use my deskt speakers I decided to try something different with the tangbands. Thus I threw them in Berndt's needles (transmissionlines). Bigger, but more bass.
If you need desktop/bookshelf speaker;s, Zaph's boxes are great. You can find both of the designs on my site.

tangbands both zaphaudio's boxes and Berndt Burghards Needles.

Would an open baffle single driver Fostex speaker design, give me greater detail and more listening pleasure from my T-Amp, than my current speakers (JBL Northridge E-100’s)

They would be placed in a medium sized room, 26’ by 15’, from what I have read previously, I assume that they would offer a large improvement.

Id be open to basically any design, or commercial speaker costing under $1000/pair US.

What would be my best plan to follow, within this price?

PS: I have a family member that owns a handmade furniture shop, so I have access to all the tools of the trade, the complexity of the cabinet would not be an issue.
