I would have to look it up to be accurate, but it is a 10 - 54 2 axis CNC with 3 phase 3 hp continuously variable speed motor. Weight is about 3300lb. This is what it looks like. Brand is Kent.

Jeeezzzz... I can't imagine any good way of bringing that monster in Canada and dropping it in my basement... probably only transportation, customs and taxes would be more than I am prepared to pay for. I am looking for a tabletop model, something of the size sidiy linked to above.

Thanks, very interesting. Has anybody purchased a CNC tool from Lumenelabs? The website doesn't seem to be very rich in information about their products.

I don't think I'm qualified to DIY a CNC tool ( except for the required software 😀 ). In fact, I'm pretty lost at any mechanical stuff beyond basic drilling and filing, so I would like to get a complete kit to assembly and test.

I just did a search on eBay for CNC kit and came up with two different auctions one from the UK for C$270 and $176 and another from a US seller for something around $270. That's only the first page of a bunch .

There's also a DIY CNC forum here. There's so much cool stuff available these days, unimaginable even fifteen years ago.

I saw a demo with this thing last Sat. Nice for pcb contour milling and light metal work like front panels, brackets etc.

Thanks, I've looked on EBay myself and I was unable to identify anything that looks like a complete and decent kit. Parts yes, but then again, I'm such an idiot when it comes to mechanical stuff that jumping from a pile of motors and slides to a working CNC machine looks to me like riding to Mars. Plus that all kind of plastic parts are definitely a turn off.

I got earlier this year a quote from MotionTek ( Laser Engraver CNC Router CNC KITS controller Canada USA Australia ) here in Toronto for a brand new R48 machine (this is about my dream tool), but it's 8k, taxes and installation included. Not in my league, unfortunately 🙁 Now, if I could find a second hand R48, that would be a sweet deal 🙂 Or something smaller (I don't think I will ever need 48"x48").

I'm subscribing to CNCZone, unfortunately the topics are little over my head 🙁

Very nice, I have to check some details and the other costs. Usually, shipping, customs, taxes are doubling the price 🙁 Anyway, that's about what I would ever need.

There are a few chinese machines available on EBay that seem to be very good, reasonable priced and even offering free shipping, however I'm not sure if I can trust those guys. Anybody got one of those?

Have you looked for a local "MakeIt" club? I was jealous in CA when I saw one for a $125 a month where you could access several $100k's of SOTA laser and water jet cutters and CNC machines.
