so why are dual banana jacks used as power amp speaker output connectors??
and as they are consistently used on multimeters does that mean we are to question all measurement results?

It should not be used on a power amp anymore. All Pro amps are Speakon now.
And on measurement equipment, the plugs are isolated woth a plastic jacket, not bare.

so if you could tell me what difference the isolated plastic jacket makes that may convince me your correct.
Sake of legacy I suppose ?
To answer your question : prevent accidental short circuits.
Anyway, Speakon provides a better contact, this parameter alone should convince you of it's superiority.

the current ratings for Speakon and banana jacks are equivalent at 30 amps so to say that Speakon provide a better contact is somewhat false.
i'm not a fan of singles i've always used dual's and yes it's possible to have an accidental short across a banana jack but for me the convenience of being able to flip phase quickly is essential in multi way or multiple speaker systems try that with a speakon...
don't get me wrong i love speakon's but to dismiss banana jacks as inferior is somewhat false!
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

I do not doubt that Speakon connectors are somewhat superior, but that does not mean that older connectors (such as bananas) are worthless.
I was thinking that...
Any fool knows you should power down before connecting/disconnecting.
I was thinking that...
