There was a short discussion about this subject in the "Solid State" -part of diyAudio, but I decided to continue it here under "Alternative Technologies".
So... I would be extremely interested to know if and how SolidDrive from Induction Dynamics or similar "shakers" could be used to turn a plane into a dipole speaker with constant radiation pattern over used frequency band. How to do it so that speaker won´t be omnidirectional nor have resonanses in used band? Is it even possible and have anyone tried this?
My idea is to have a 6' tall and ´maximum 1' wide panel made of something extremely light and rigid material like carbon fiber. There would be one (pair of) SolidDrive to shake this panel. The whole thing should hang up loosely by using wires so that there would be as little mounting forces as possible and the panel move straight all the way. It would act as a dipole line source speaker.
But is it even possible to have linear and constant phase movement over the whole surface so that panel would be a real dipole? And if not, what would be upper frequency limit where phase requirement does´t meet the case?
