Well since class D is the present and probably also the future (FDA) developments go fast and can be exciting. My method is to buy and modify cheap ChiFi devices and currently mainly Infineon MA12070 based ones and think they outperform many classic amplifiers. No more handling/lifting smelly and heavy old amplifiers that need costly repairs and … time.
These cost a fraction of the costs of buying and overhauling old stuff. Saves making lists too 🙂
All personal of course. I discovered in time that collecting piles of old stuff did not result in listening to them.

The main reason for me to prefer old very heavy weight amplifiers with very high idle power is that the waveform of the residual distortion has a sinusoidal character while it is sawtooth or triangular in all Class-D amplifiers as far as I know (check out images from stereophile and compare with good examples of Sudgen and Pass Aleph 4 in the first both images).
Unfortunately, this also often applies to analog class AB amplifiers with high efficiency (low quiescent current in the output) - possibly further favored by switching power supplies instead of very heavy transformers and very expensive elcaps.
The only way to avoid high idle power is the use of amplifiers with low output power with high efficiency speakers.
To find out old stuff in this respect was the aim to start this thread.

Try a recent one. Fast forward a few years please. You mentioned yourself that the Eigentakt device could be superior isn’t it?!
That heavy transformer and large caps also do good service in class D amplifiers although many have SMPS. Obviously not my cup of tea.

Have you seen the price of the modules!!??
I tried a lot of class D amp, I didn't keep any and always for the same reasons, hearing fatigue.
I can't explain that in a tangible way, it's just an observation, the only one I kept is used on my work table to test preamps and speakers.

It is too general. If I state the same about class A much counter reasoning will take place.
It would help to mention which modules (and what year) and what quality. It would be silly to compare 25 Euro BRZHiFi amplifiers to let’s say a Pass INT-25.
Some I know tried Tripath TA2024 in 2007 and say class D is bad. Often they listen with their eyes to scope pictures too.

I still use an old Acoustat TNT-200 sometimes. Not yet beaten by any other in that price range (solid state that is).
Soon i will get the chance to audit a
Classé audio amp (Omega).

Warm sounding and hot to touch. The A1 got hotter in use than every amp class A and otherwise. You could fry your bacon on top once its up to temp.Musical fidelity A1/A1x sound very warm, maybe to much. I still have a Pioneer M-25, also high bias, M-22 was full class A.
Also know that Pioneer elite. Classe has nice A designs but large, really large.
