For an inexpensive de-soldering tool I recommend the bulb type. They are inexpensive, work really well, and are available everywhere. I used one of these for a few years before I picked up a Metcal pro unit.. Dave
For me unheated solder suckers suck because they never suck the solder completely. So I went to solder wick.
I used to use wick too, but the new silicone-tipped suckers (which can create a seal around the pad & hole) make a huge difference.
You can always follow using the sucker with wick.
Saves metres of wick if you suck the bulk up first.

They are different tools for different jobs. Trying to work on a valve amp with turret strips using solder wick would be a nightmare, or trying to work on surface mount parts with a solder sucker. Well you could, but you would end up sucking the little parts into the solder sucker!
