I solded my Dam quite months ago and keeped my two Subbu 😀 which sounded better stock (than the stock Dam bought in january) and even better with few mods.
I jujst can't understand why the rev 2 is not coming with the radial caps revision ?!
Soekris had sold the first pcb at friendly price for us diyers, it could be very nice also he launch a v3 with all the shared time diyers also spend to improve the digitals filter, the PS layout and the general debuging !
After all he is maybe launching a commercial line (the little v3 talked above ?) : all the shared work deserves maybe a good fixed improved V.diy pcb 🙂 !
I don't know, just two cents !

I have just build my Soekris dam 1021 rev2 12 version...
At this point there have not been any mods or filters. Completely stock.
To my ears it sounds fantastic!
Best dac i have ever owned.
I came from a najda board with Burson SS opamps, before that a Dac 19 from GD-Audio and i have owned some beresford dacs. Not the most expensive competition... but the Soekris outperformes them greatly.

Hi Eldam, are you seriously claiming a Subbu V3 sounds better than a DAM ? It does indeed measure better in some aspects but I expected it to be in the shadow of the DAM...soundwise. At least I read some posts claiming this. R2R against Sigma Delta, the mother of DAC topologies against the 4$ axis of evil Sigma Delta ES9023 😀 Assumption...the mother of all f**k ups. I am glad to hear you still enjoy our tiny device.

How would you describe the differences?

The treble was the most obvious... People can say that sigma delta dacs can be harsh in the treble region. I now know what they mean. The dam is very very detailed and smooth in the hights.
Soundstage is bigger. Bass is more proportional, better in place.
Lots of low level detail, very refined.
It puts a smile on my face 🙂

I see, you compared with Beresford (PCM1716 = Delta Sigma), DAC 19 (PCM1704 = R2R so disqualified) and Najda (can't find what DAC chip they use). PCM1716 is quite old too (1998) and the only Delta Sigma of the lot. So the comparison is quite thin, not to say it is invalid....

Thin? It is what it is. It compares what he had to the DAM. What else can you request?
Thanks for Shutdown for the report. Smiles är good.

Beresford were old ones. I think the 7520 and caiman had a wolfson. Najda has a cirrus logic.
My comments are just my 2 cents
I do think a dac is more than its chip.
The najda is shipped with ic opamps, putting in discrete burson opamps made a huge difference but compared to the dam it loses.
I like that the dam is discrete. I also tried the digital volume and connect direct to the power amp inputs, but input on the pre-amp sounded better.

Thnx
Anyway, i think the dam is worth a decent case... 🙂
Going to work on that.
I used the raw output... I dont like opamps
Also my Bryston only accepts rca

Comparisons with a few older DACs (AB comparisons or from memory ?) can not be the ground to make general statements that Delta Sigma DACs sound harsh in the highs...
I have quite some DACs with various topologies for comparison purposes but I am reluctant to claim a whole topology for a certain "sound character" as the implementation is key factor to good sound. There are lousy sounding R2R DACs and there are lousy sounding Delta Sigma devices. The fun is to find the best performing one regardless of topology.
Opinions and facts....always difficult to keep them apart.

Ah, why not, as it seems to be the norm among audiophiles. "Opamps are bad", "valves are good", "class D is bad", "analog is good", "switching power supplies are bad", "vinyl is better than CD", etc. etc.
This is why we all should use the latest -3,5dB "moredamfilters" filters?

It is why DSP and DAC systems should be designed with sufficient headroom. Inter-sample peaks have been a well-known and well-understood issue for quite a while.
