i've looked all over the place for SOAD 70A cd mechanism .
these were made by technics and found in many different models.
i've seen some sites that mention them but still no luck.
would anyone know where i can find one?

I've got a working Panasonic CD player, an SL-PJ224, that I am pretty sure has one. One the bottom side of the attached servo board, there are two main SMT ICs, an 8373S and an 8374S. On the top side, there is one through hole IC (which appears to be the BTL driver) marked AN8377N. Does this sound right? It looks like the picture I have attached.

Also, what CD player are you putting this in? Are you really sure it is the mech that is the problem?

the controls and remote seem to work fine,the laser head only returns to its initial position but spindle does not operate nor does the head move otherwise.
it slowly started to have disc reading errors for the past 2 years or so.
so i'm assuming but?
player not worth much but liked the sound of it.very fluid.

Glad to hear it worked. It is quite cool how mechs like this are pluga and play, with the servo attached. No fiddling round adjusting stuff.
The shipping was even faster than you think, it spent half the time in transit sitting in US customs.

Here are some common problems in the S0AD-70A mechanism, which is now getting very difficult to find new:
Prob:
CD Tray open/close mechanism is sticky or doesn't complete.
Solution:
1. Change belt on the tray motor pulley.
2. Detach motor drive wires from the main board, and gently remove oxide buildup on each wire with a small blade. Re-tin with fresh solder if necessary.
Prob: Spindle motor doesn't operate or is erratic or too fast
Solution:
1. Replace 100uF/6.3V capacitors on the Servo PCB. One is located next to LM2940 regulator, and the other is next to the Servo IC. These were originally Panasonic KF series electrolytics, which dry out or leak electrolyte over time. Replace with high-quality 105c low-profile/SMD parts if possible, 220uF/6.3 will also work. Be very careful while de-soldering the old caps to ensure that the pads don't delaminate from the board.
2. Inspect and check for dry joints on Servo board.
3. Dust and clean out the spindle motor shaft.
Prob: CD spins up, but takes too long to be detected, or is not detected at all.
Solution:
1. Same as above - also check flat ribbon cable between the servo board and the main board on the player for oxidized contacts.
Prob: Laser head doesn't seek reliably across all tracks, skips or returns repeatedly at a specific location on CD
Solution:
1. Check the coarse-positioning sensor - it's a linear carbon track potentiometer on the servo board, with sliding wipers from the Laser head unit. Clean the surface gently with a small piece of paper tissue soaked with a drop of Isopropyl-alcohol to remove any dust or smears on the carbon track surface.
Prob:
