I have just built a mosfet-Sziklai amp that has the driver soldered directly at the gate with megashort legs (< 1 mm) through a smd gate stopper resistor.
I definitely would not design something like this if i was payed to do so. Why? I don't know how bad has to be the layout to make it oscillate, but that design is much more sensitive to building quality than standard ef designs, so it would not be suited to mass-manufacturing. Anyways i had only to make two channels and i had the time (and it was funny) to do it well.
So you can design your own amp not only to fit your taste but also to take the most profit from the things you can do that wouldn't be possible in a factory and to suit the parts you have on hand.

My last 3 amp builds were all on veroboard with 4 inch leads to the gates on the vertical MOSFETS. This didnt cause a problem unless I put a scope lead on them.
Bought in amps vary wildly.
From cheap far east imports made very minmally to lavish designs made to get the best sound from the best components and design with a price to match.
