Well I am gonna migrate to headphones for a couple months and I would really like to build a amp for these things. I have some electronic experience and can read diagrams fairly well.

How much do amps usually cost to build? I am looking to keep it between 50-100

Hi A J,

there isn't too much discussion of headphone amps at diyaudio - you might want to have a look at www.headwize.com which focusses specifically on headphones. Look in Library and then Projects for a large number of designs from the simple to the very complex.

You should consider this "Zen-like headphone amp"
which is designed here at diyaudio,
in this thread:
ZEN-like headphones amp
It is built with MOSFET, those Nelson Pass uses.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

tortello's amp

I know many of diyaudio.com members were interested in this amp.
They all wanted the details about it.
tortello's work even resulted in that he could publish his design
at the website nemestra provided above:

Headwize - the Home of Headphones Projects at the web.
They even have a special forum there, for all Homebuilders of Headp-amps.

---------------------------------

As you have a Sennheiser580, which is 300 ohm impedance (like Sennh.600),
you do not need quite as much current as 300mA.
Tortello's amp can be set to run as much.

-------------------------------------

Anyway you chose, you will find best projects at Headwize.
They are also very well described and also updated.
And you will also get support and answer to your questions
in this thread, as you go on.
Even tortello himself might drop by here.

/halo - has already dropped 😎
