And it doesn't feel much thinner or lighter than clingfilm? Are they both so light that it's difficult to compare them or have I been sold rubbish?
Folding it 6 or 7 times makes it thick enough to measure with reasonable accuracy using a caliper (slide rule). Should give you a good estimate.

Assuming that you have bought 6 micron thick membrane indeed, you could be right that it is not thinner than clingfilm because clingfilm is really thin (but not as strong and durable as Mylar).
You may try some 4 micron. You can feel the difference between 4 and 6 micron and according to several builders hear the difference too.

My mylar is very crinkly compared to cling wrap. Its unbelievably strong, a 1" strip is hard to break. I measure mine at exactly 6uM.

If it's Dupont Mylar it is probably 6.3u thick = 25 gauge
