In my other DIY project, a "mame arcade machine", some people use smoked plexiglass before the monitor to get a better contrast. Don't know if that can be used in a projector.

Could this actually work? I'm assuming you would lose a little brightness but I'm still interested. The only thing that I'm not happy with my LCD panel is the contrast ratio (100:1) and anything that would improve it would be great.
Well I tough someone could use it just after the lcd panel before the projection lens. We should give a try 🙂
And yes you would probably lose some brightness

My company sells high quality window film and I was able to take a few sheets of 3% 5% 10% 20% 35% and place them on front of the projector (I own an epson projector). It does give you blacker blacks, actually it helps ALOT. Unfortunately it also darkens the whole picture and it makes all the colors mudded up. No good what so ever. You would need to have some serious lamp power to be able to use this method of getting better contrast.
