SME 3009 Tonearm Question

Hi I have an SME 3009. The join where the counterweight attaches to the end of the tonearm is hanging loosely and I am wondering how to fix this. ANy suggestions would be appreciated.

Very common with these arms. The correct solution is to buy a replacement counterweight decoupling rubber from SME. From time to time you can also find it on Ebay. Alternatively you can diy with a suitable piece of rubber tubing. I don't think the compliance is critical for the arm and you may even prefer the sound if the counterweight is attached more firmly. The "Improved" version discards the rubber anyway.

Hi analog_sa,I believe the compliance of the two rubbers(not one)is important as they decouple the counterweight from the armtube,offering also damping to any resonances might hit back the stylus.Further,I think it is not possible to attach the stub firmly without the rubbers as there is no attachment screw.Only the two glued rubbers are the contact between stub and tube.They cost very little and come with instructions for cleaning the old glue and fitting and glueing the new ones.

Awesome, thanks a lot for that guys, stay tuned I picked up this old thorens from a second hand store for $20.00 and I am attempting the impossible - gradual restoration, with next to know knowledge.

so I will no doubt be back again for more advise. I have also noticed that the 2 of the contact points in the arm socket seem to be pushed in further than the other 2. Is this going to create hassles for me and is it worth orderi?

The pins in the arm socket are spring loaded.They are pushed back when the headshell is in place and come out when the headshell is removed.Put the headshell in place and check for comtinuity between headshell pins and output RCA sockets.If continuity is ok,there is nothing to worry about.
