I'm interested in maybe DIY'ing a pair of speakers for my office computer for MP3 playback.
What's the smallest enclosure I could get away with to get bass response down to 45 Hz or so? I was thinking of using the Adire Extremis in a small sealed box with a Linkwitz transform circuit, but I suspect I could make things simpler (and cheaper) with a ported enclosure and the 'right' driver. Any suggestions?

they may be a little difficult to cross over though, due to the cone's shape they have a response bump in the 1k-2k range, that you might have to notch.
talking about bass response they go as low as 40hz in a 5-7 liters bass reflex enclosure

How is everything in Mass today?
I would look at either 7" Dayton Aluminum Driver or Dayton's 5.25" Aluminum Driver
7": F3 = 40 Hz with 0.697 ft3 (19.73 L) ported box
or
7": F3 = 45 Hz with 0.567 ft3 (16.05 L) ported box.
5.25": F3 = 45 Hz with 0.5 ft3 (14.15 L) ported box.
The 5.25" has plenty of examples of crossover networks for use with Tweeters.

You might consider the Seas L15. It's good for a 45hz F3 in a .38 cu ft box. As far as 5.5" drivers go, I have not seen one with better bass than this. It's relatively deep, but it does so in a normal size enclosure and has comparitvely low distortion too.

I recently built one of Troels monitor using Seas W15 and Hiquphon drivers and they sound really nice with decent bass.

It's a little expensive but it is really worth it since you could try some other inexpensive design and it turns out not to be what you want and end up costing even more money.

Thanks for the responses everyone, I really appreciate it! I've been looking at some of the small speakers over at the zaphaudio.com website too.
I think the best route will be a sub/sat system so I don't overwhelm the top of my desk with speakers. I think I will go lurk in the subwoofer section for a while...

I built a 4 inch mini monitor that went down to 45Hz. You didn't say how loud you wanted it though.
If you want to go the Extremis route, try 12 liters ported, and tune to 40 Hz. Should get you an F3 of 45 Hz, and is a quite small box.
