Acoustic first order low pass filter can be applied upon the woofer to get rid of undesired sounds rather than electrical filter. As the coil inductance disengages from loading , the woofer can be powered directly. The acoustic filter can be done simply by a cloth more or less thick covering the woofer.
Hi again Guys,
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, is someone is aware of a published design for a good sounding DIY speaker that is small (10L or less ) and has a 3 component or less crossover?
This is about a 7L box with a 5.25in AC130F1 - same as used in Bagby’s tribute to the LS5/3A - the Continuum. The twist is a 2.5in aluminum full range with a 1kHz crossover for a FAST that has good transient response.
FR58EX and AC130F1 micro-FAST / WAW
Don’t fixate on the number of components. This is a very simple crossover.
Resistors and small inductors and caps are inexpensive.
If you can get an earlier generation of FR58EX, it doesn’t have the 10kHz breakup.

HI Gents,
I ran across a review of the Triangle Titus 200 mini monitor: (Product Review ) which said it sounded great and used only a single capacitor as a crossover.
I love building speakers and have built some with 9 or more components in the crossovers which sounded very good, but am wondering if it is possible to substantially reduce the number of components and still get very good sound. If anyone is aware of a proven design that is small (10L or less ) and has a 3 component or less crossover, I would greatly appreciate hearing about it.
Thanks!
Jay
This is the most neutral bookshelf speaker I built. Crossover consists of just one capacitor. This is due to well behaved midrange. Off course it needs woofers, but i run those actively in biamp system.

Or check out my betsy wow with ribbon. It has just bsc on betsy (coil in parallel with resistor) and one cap on ribbon crossed high enough. This bookshelf actually does not need woofers, if you do not require disco loud.

xrk,
in post 23 (above)
the 2nd graph.
What is the dashed line ?
I see the phase in the 3rd pic (nice).

I'm using a 2 way WAW system with 2 Xover components.
Drive units are Monacor SPH 8M 8inch woofer and Mark Audio Pluvia 7 (4 inch) full range unit.
I'm using a 1st order series Xover at around 300Hz with no attenuation on the Pluvia.
I'm using bass reflex of approx 44 litres but the Monacor in 20 litre sealed gives a Q of 0.707 and approx Q of 0.9 for 10 litres. A few litres are required for the Pluvia so could be done in about 13 litres net with about a 1dB lift at approx 100Hz due to the Q.
Sorry I don't have any measurements, all done by ear. I messed around with a parallel 1st order for a while, when I tried a series Xover it just seemed to gel.

Legend on right side of graph. System phase - acoustical phase at microphone predicted by xsim. It can shifted somewhat by delaying the amp relative to both drivers (or equivalent to small position changes in the mic).
The seas A26 kit speaker only has a capacitor and a resistor on the tweeter.Nothing on the woofer. It is not that small however.
small?

Here's another commercial speaker with 1 cap
REFERENCE 3A - Reflector
Does anyone know what the woofer is?
(carbon fiber coaxial, something)

huh,
I thought the a26 was out of production...……………….
guess not.
What I red is that the alnico exotic tweeter is a little difficult to obtain but they have a cheaper neodymium which probably works just as fine. The bass is in stock around. As a complete kit I don’t know but who wants kits anyway.

Considering this myself as I have fond childhood memories of the a25.

DA990 SURROUND - WilAudio
(alexaudio site is gone, I saved this- translated (Google Translate) from French. (note: there were no graphs, no other specs)
DA990 Surround speakers.
The closed-load woofer, of very low volume, offers a response in the bass suitable for its use in rear effects enclosure. The speakers are filtered in 6dB/oct with only 3 components. The enclosure is built in 15mm thick MDF.
3.75 liters heavily packed dacron
AlexAudio DA990 front mains (more components)

This is from 2002. It says cap and coil. They list the model numbers for the woofer and tweeter.
