Doubling of power creates twice the output but due to the way we hear (logarithmically) it will not sound twice as loud. It produces a 3db increase in level, around a 10db increase would be needed to "sound" twice as loud; this represents 10 times the power roughly!

10W will be incredibly loud if you placing these on a desk right near to you. At half a metre a pair will be producing 109db continuous and perhaps more peak! This is plenty ;)

"Surely 20W RMS is double 10W RMS and therefore has double the sound power?"

It doesn't work that way. It takes ten times the power in watts to double the perceived loudness.

Those "expensive" amps are dirt cheap for the quality of sound they produce, and a power adaptor will set you back way less that 10 pounds:

If you want to pay just pennies, your best bet is to buy some old set of computer speakers at a thrift store and then rip the guts out of it.

ahh ok makes sense now.

I would like them to be around 15-20W RMS since I play music very loud and I will take this desk with me to uni :) also I stick music on and walk around the house so...

commercially they would not be that powerful though.

thanks for clearing up alot of my questions btw, I do have a lot!

Just need to sort the amp out so i can get on an order everything.
I'm really rubbish at searching on ebay and the internet. forums help :p

Would it be possible to find a cheap but good 15-20W RMS at 8ohm amp along with a power supply for me please anyone?

thanks again all!!!

I've had a look on maplin and found some interesting amps that seem cheap and good

whats wrong with this one, 18W rms at 8ohm :p

to be honest I haven't got a clue I just thought I could buy an amp to connect the speakers to and plug it in...

can someone choose me a cheap amp from the UK and all the necessary additions like power.

I have a heat sink off an PC processor/motherboard so that should be more than good enough, just mod it with some holes :p

The Maplin kit requires a large AC transformer and large heatsink, as a finished amplifier it will be fairly costly (about £45 minimum and you need 2).

Don't know that theres anything wrong with the ebay amplifier module. Looks like it probably uses these chips bridged:

Unsure of the Mosfet claim though  . You'll need a high current DC supply, a switch mode one like this will work:

12v model. Bit expensive so if you can find a suitable one from an LCD monitor that'd be a cost saver :)

Its probably a low budget compared to the type of people from this thread.

I tried google but it was hard to find drivers around 7mm/2.5"
especially since the results kept coming up with speakers systems with cases...

As for budget probably in the £5-£40 for the pair.
Can someone help please?
Thanks for your time!

Do a search for Blue Aran, they do a massive range of speakers at the best prices.

that blue aran website is awesome. The drivers look really good and are well cheap compared to the monacor. Shame that they don't stock any speakers smaller than 5.25".

These look really good for £7.50, its a real shame about the size but I will keep these in mind for my next project!

Does anyone have any ideas which drivers are in this speaker set. They're exactly the right size.

Also are they're actually any tweeters that have a diameter of about 2" maximum (not cone size, overall diameter)

Monacor DT284, but also very expensive...

Otherwise Visaton CP13, but they don't sound half as good...

Monacor SPH-30X is great by the way....

But if you want this driver for less money you can also get:

I suspect it uses a slightly different voice coil though....
