small horn for 2inch comp. driver

Doug: thanks for your reply. I agree I won't be winning the "I can hear 20K prize" When I was looking at possible comp drivers for the Klipsch Forte ll horns I was looking for smooth extended response both on and off axis along with a well behaved impedance curve. Off axis response should probably look as much like the on axis as possible but rolled off. My rational was that a driver with a smooth response that has no irregularities was probably going to be a good sounding one with no weird response issues. Many of the one inch units I saw were anything but smooth and well extended. The pro industry seems to think that 20K response simply means that the driver gets there even if it is 8-10 db down (or more) when compared to its average.

If you are considering controlled directivity then the off axis response should not roll off. Again this is one of those choices things. Geddes and some other experts pointed this out a couple of months ago in the waveguide thread. I wanted to know the draw backs of a larger CD (1.4" or 2") and its all about the loss of directivity above X KHz. You have to pick what is important to you. I like to try the larger CDs because they can go lower (<= 700Hz instead of 1KHz) but Im compromising directivity in the higher frequencies. I have to choose what compromise I can live with.

I was looking for drivers in which the off axis response tracked the on axis response in a smooth and similar fashion (similar looking curve). This would seem to me to be an indication of a well executed design and would result in even power response throughout a room. From what I saw two inch drivers were not only better extended in both directions but they were for the most part smoother in overall response. I am not suggesting that all were like this but in a comparison of the best I found the two inch were the clear winners. as far as smooth extended response goes.
I did not see a lot of polar response graphs for the comp drivers I looked at of if there were they may have been on different pages so I did not notice them. Would you describe what features of a polar response graph are of importance to note? I would imagine smooth uniform with minimal lobe patterns? Thanks Moray James.

You need to find more measurements because inherently the larger CDs will not be as good in the higher frequencies. You simply can not use a single on axis response to make any conclusions.

PS: most companies do not seem to provide the throat exit angle of their comp drivers. I would have thought that this was critical to insure a good match to possible horns that may be used with a driver to minimize reflections. I suppose that companies want you to think that you have all the horn options in the world when you buy their compression driver as long as it fits on.


yeah, companies do not do all the measurements we need. Pro companies are better at publishing off axis response plots.

It would be a shame to ruin a nice project with good drivers(imho) with a "bad" horn. budget pr horn hmm around 100 dollars. but if it doesnt make a very big differens in a home theater system, lets keep it down😉.

Pan, how low do you/would you Cross with the dayton?

As i have room for up to 8x8/8dia circular, what are the pros and cons of the size and the shape: elliptical, round square.

what differences do they typically make? I badly need the basics of horn loading.

i am a decent woodworker, but iim not gonna spend a large amount of time woodworking, when i got no clue to the why and how of hornloading. espacially when its for a set of speakers that will sit in a black room... but mayby those beautis for another project in the future.

The little ellipticals sound to me like almost no horn at all. And that's what they are. 😉
I liked the Selenium BBC horns better.

Somewhere I have measurement to dig up. The horns used in the econowave or the new Dayton sound very good.
 
compact horn

Panduro:

A smallish horn that sounds great is the JBL 2344A, bi-radial horn. It is a 1" throat, 12" x 12" horn with 100 x 100 dispersion. Affectionately known as the "butt cheek" horn. It will run down to about 900 hertz.

JBL had some monitors where they cut the bottom of the molded plastic material of the horn flange to fit down right on top of the 12" woofer. There was also a smaller version the 2342. It is about 9.5" x 9.5". It crosses over at a higher frequency.

Many people comment that the 2344a does not "sound like a horn". If you go with the 2344a, you can get a matching tweeter, the 2404. Baby butt cheeks. Cross it over at about 5000-7000 hertz.

oh my god, maybe i should have stayed with ordinary domes LOL. so much i dont know.

gonna try that selenium hm17-25 first.
If i can find a european retailor. googled them and it, but only found dealers in the states. wrote an email to their brazilian headquarters and asked, hopefully they know LOL.
