Small full range for Desk use

Dave,
Not to hijack this thread, but would the FF105WKs in the Lance enclosure mentioned above sound better than the CHR70.3 drivers that I am currently listening to? I have the CHRs in the 7.5L enclosure shown on the markaudio site. Thanks.
Clay

As to the actual question - it's a matter of taste on the drivers' sonics - the current CHR isn't my own personal favorite of the MA line, and I've not actually done a direct comparison of the two drivers in approximately comparable enclosures. I can say that in a larger enclosure - Vampyr - the 105 is very good - but that's not a compact desk top unit.

I just came across these on a Dutch DIY Audio forum based on the Visaton FRS 8 4Ohm. That looks like a fun and cheap build to start with. 🙂

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Nice simple project and the method allows a easy to way to customise the finish to personal taste using the wood cheeks and the red fabric for the body means no painting or veneering to worry about.

Edit great way to dip a tow in to diying

sportclay - in my experience the midrange forwardness is not restricted to just the 105 in the WK series. While I can live comfortably with the 85 in small desktop / computer scenarios, there's at least two other models I don't think I've seen mentioned yet in this thread - the relatively unheralded Alpair A5.2, and A6. For close up use, the paper version of the latter is worth a look.

The Alpair 5.2 fits the Bloodhound and the Alpair 6.2 paper and metal both fit the Stinger. This is kind of neat because people can buy both sets of drivers and switch them back and forth in the same cabinet for those who are up to such foolishness. I think you know who you are.

Both also work in th euMar-Ken6. 2.5 litre. This set firs in a breif case and will ba matched with a quality TPA3118 amp with a switching supply so i can plug it in anywhere (in the bottom picture is the same driver (but red) in a box 2x as large (near optimum volume).

Thanks. I have DIY'd before though. I've already built a big folded voight pipe based on TWQT before with vintage 50's Isophone drivers in it.

And the Alpair 5.2's were mentioned before, but I have not found a supplier of those in my country, which is annoying. And in comparison the FRS8's are so cheap you can really monkey around with them. 😉
