I was very pleased to see Denis's (dhenryp) thread about the larger Frugel Horn: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=144190 I prefer taller speakers, gives me a soundstage just above my ears and I do admire the elegant simplicity of Denis's layout.
My listening room will be 7ft x 10ft, it's under construction at the moment in the garage. Trying the Bugel Horn footprint, on some folded paper into a room corner I realised that the speakers would be too close. Here we go again I thought ah well!
After some thought I remembered the Buschhorn Mk1 and after some searching found this: http://www.speaker-online.de/bauen/bhorn.htm more searching led me to find that the HornShoppe horn is made to this design albeit for a 4" driver. I also found a report on another forum that this speaker sounded better than homemade Buschhorn Mk2's. Hmmmm heartening news.
Could I stretch this horn in the same fashion that Denis did with the Frugel and what would be the best way to do it given my elementary skills?
Given the measured points on the Mk1 drawing and by directly taking other measurements I drew out the horn in two sections at 1/4 scale and found that a parallel section could be made in the speaker 825mm long by 42mm wide and a wedge could be built into it to give the taper as per Denis's layout, this would begin with a 42mm square and taper to zero.
After I'd drawn it 3 or 4 times I got a feel for it, realised my mistakes and was able to draw the layout and get the horn to the 1400mm throat to mouth length spot on.
Here's the drawing:
Now I have a very small footprint that will give me a 5ft separation. All I've got to do now is finish my little room and make them 🙂

At the moment I have a pair Needles with Visaton FRS8 and have been happily listening to them for a number of years. The Buschhorn Mk1 used this driver and I will try it in the small Bugels when I've made them.
Since I made the Needles lots more 3" drivers have appeared on the market and I think I will try either the Peerless FR35/8 or the Dynavox FR88-EX. Being a bit of a stingy git especially when it comes to anything DIY it will probably be the Peerless as they are 1/2 the price of the Dynavox.
