::now lesten please::

The bottom line is that I know things will change, I don’t care. The point of this for me is to acquaint my self with the rage of prices of high-end components. I know things will change but that doesn’t matter. I am creating a budget and I want to know what manufactures are good. I don’t really car about what is coming right now. I just would like to treat this as if I were going to buy this stuff tomorrow. I know things will change and I know manufactures will create new products. Do you get what I am getting at?

Thanks,
Slice

Please don’t abandon me.

Please don’t abandon me.
I still need to learn more. Please don’t let this thread die. I still need help. I know you guys have lives to but please don’t drop me like a hot potato. I thank you for all the help you have given me so far and I would love to get more. You guys have realy been helping me. Please find the time to keep helping me if at all possible. I know you guys don’t get anything for this and I thank you for helping me.

Thanks a million,
Slice
🙁

Slice, in following this post I dont think its fair to say that people are abandoning you at this time, I cant really see what more there is for them to discuss. You most likely now know the ins and outs of audio/video hi-fi equipment pricing, as well as many peoples views on various manufacturers and their products. Now I'm sure everybody would be happy to help further if they had some other questions to answer, but right now there seems to be nothing relevant to the topic for them to discuss. Im just trying to say, be patient, and give these guys something to go off of, they're not psychics ya know 😉

well, i guess you are right...

i am just a little tense about this. it is a large investment and i want to make sure i get the best results. i guess i will start conversation. i know bryston is good, but how good? are the pretty much the best? what do you think of marantz; are my selections any good? do you think this combination of equipment would create a good or great result? well sorry if i have been a little demanding, i am just excited. well thanks for the input so fare and i look forward to hearing more. by the way i would really love some feed back on the Vifa tweeter, is it better then my peerless selection? i am also going to be changing the projector. Sanyo will be releasing a PLV-70 and more then likely BoxLight will be releasing a version of it too. just thought you would like to know.

thanks,
Slice

Slice may I offer you a piece of advice and let me say that it would do you well to listen and heed these words. Decide what you want the final experience of the system to be like and then listen to those who have come before you to find out the best way to achieve this given your budget. You are still young, you simply do not have the experience some of the other people here have. I must say that although you have improved somewhat since you can here I still do not see even a hint of any such sentiment in any of your posts or threads. Sometimes the answers will not be what you want to hear but listen to them anyway dont be so quick to reject things that are not what you want to hear. This is what learning is all about and we all have plenty left to learn in life. I do not write these things to condemn or insult you but rather I write these things in the sincere hope that you will listen and learn a valuable lesson in life before you go blowing absolutely insane amounts of money on something that will not end up all that it could have been.

Slice,
I can vouch for that projector. The Boxlight 13HD is what I have, and I'm entirely happy with it. Rather than a Da-Lite screen though, may I suggest the Stewart (www.stewartfilm.com) GreyHawk screen? They improve contrast on the already excellent (700:1) contrast ratio of that particular LCD (Great contrast=more realistic blacks). Also, the Boxlight comes in a 16:9 aspect ratio; you will want a screen that matches that aspect ratio.

Another concern I have is the speaker wire. What are you using, if you can find 500' for $200? The speaker cable I use and love is Monster Cable XP. It's 12 gauge, THX certified, it has excellent sound, and (Not REALLY important, I guess 😉 ), it looks good. That's $.75 per foot, and about $.85 if you include your little 15% thing. Good speaker cable is mucho important (I'd go so far as to recommend Z1, except that it doesn't come in the lengths you need), and with a 75k system, you don't need to scrimp.

What about the DVD player? The specs look nice, and it sounds like a nice player, but I'd wonder if that's what he wants to look for. I'd say that when designing a system this nice (That should sound SOO good), Super Audio CD is a must. SACD is a new format, which completely blows standard CD out of the water. Listening to it is like the difference between tape and CD (Not quite, I guess, but it sure seems that way). The frequency range is better, the sample rate is huge, etc, etc... For this, I'd reccomend the Sony DVP-S9000ES player. It's built like a fortress (You could give it to a 3 year old for a month and it wouldn't break), it plays SACD, and it is often called the best thing around $1000 for DVDs. IF SACD isn't a concern, and having multiple discs in a player is (Versus having one at an extraordinarily high quality), I'd certainly stick with the JVC, but with such an otherwise great system, I'd just think about the options.

Also, what are your plans for cables? (You have speaker cable, but no Component Video cable, or interconnects, or anything)

Me@Home
/PS: That system looks beautiful. I want it 😛

Don't get me wrong, the Boxlight is an exelent projector ( i have seen one), but you could do better, maybe the sharp z9000. It can be had for about the same price and the image quality is the closest to CRT I have seen, except for pricey Lcos units. I would definitely give the z9000 a look.

Bigfoot, you've tested both projectors? How then did the Z9000 come on top? The 13HD came out as superior in everything I did with it, and I still thought the contrast "felt" better on the 13.

Also, you say it would have to upsample to run HDTV? You are correct, if you are talking about 1080i. What about 720p, though? It doesn't have to upsample at all, and because that picture is progressive, it is (IMHO) superior. I kind of think of it as a 1080i versus 1440i (720p) picture, and I hope they accept the 720p as the way to go when HDTV standards are finalized.

That's it now,
Ryan

I'm back

Ryan

I've seen both, and the sharp was better in almost every way. The internal scaling was better, the colors more life-like, and the picture absolutely stunning. There was no noticible screen door from 9' with a 100" screen. The sharp just needs tweaking. The boxlight had very nice blacks indeed, much better in the 20ire range from the box. But with the sharp tweaked with the computer, the blacks were even more stunning! I still would be happy with either unit, but i would prefer the sharp or marantz equivalent. As for 720p, when it is run in a native mode, the 1280x720 signal will not fill the entire lcd panel. And yes 720p looks better, IMO, but the technical specs needed to do it on a crt display device are pretty pushy, and therefore most tv's only do 1080i and 480p. Like so many things, 1080i will probably win out, as more people can view it. It sucks, but the same thing happened to betavision (or whatever it is called). Now 1080p on the other hand...
And yes a stewart greyhawk screen would be HIGHLY recommended. It really brings out the best in any digital projector.

And slice,

480p is nowhere close to the quality to film. When you watch a dvd on a 30" tv, it looks like film, but blow it up and you'll be wanting more. Film would look realistic with 1080p, but even today's formats don't quite do it justice. Also, since you are going lcd, defocus it slightly so that the screen door is less noticeable. But if you ain't buying for 2 years, then I'd wait for the price to come down, and buy an lcos projector (1366x1024, but can be set to 1366x786 aka WXGA). The lcos projectors blow away anything I have seen that is a digital projector, and looks like a crt unit. And just wondering, but why aren't you doing anything you post for a long time? No theater for 2 years, so surround sound for a while, no towers for your bro for a few months? I'm just curious.

slicemaster101, if it is an education you want, there is only one good place to get it :

Home Theater Forum

You can start your education by going into the "Home Theater Basics Area" and reading the Primer posted there. You can continue by doing searches on the gear you own, or are considering buying, because over time the membership has probably discussed every piece of gear ever made.

One word of warning : many members are very opinionated. If you solicit comments on that forum (which will help you), some people will try and dissuade you from your choice of gear. Only pay attention to them if they have rational arguments 😀 .

Hope this helps.

::I'm Back::

Well I am back from my one-week vacation to Utah. My dad has started designing the house this monster system will be located in and things look promising. As for speaker cable it is going to be the newest monster line…I think XP but I am not sure. I am going to be buying high quality interconnects and video cables from a place near me. They make really good stuff and use nothing but the best components. I a accepting of all your suggestions and I have lessened to so systems and have finally figured out what I want and I think my out line fits the bill pretty well. Any way I seem to hear a lot about my drivers. What is wrong with them? From what I hear peerless is great. I am open and I don’t know if all you guys have downloaded the new spec sheet but I have changed my
Amps to:
4x – BRYSTON 4B SST amps (drive all but subs)
2x – BRYSTON 7B SST amps (drive subs)
This will save me a lot of money. They will only cost me $17,200 according to BRYSTON’s MSRP. I feel that the drivers and the amps are a good match but if you guys feel otherwise please feel free to express your opinions. I noticed that some of you are worried about my DVD player selection due to SACD incompatibility. Well you have to remember that this is probably not going to be the model that I actually will buy, but rather a price rang for good manufactures.

Thanks,
Slice

Couldn't this $76000 be better spent on, hmmm, lets see, education maybe.

As for your drivers, they are fine, its just that with that sort of budget it is possible to extend into the upper levels of drivers, ie the Excel's, or the new Revelators.

You won't have any problems with the amps.

Ensure that you get a well shielded video cable, if not component then S-Video, and try and construct the room so that the DVD player is as close to the projector as possible.

Calm down, Griff, Slice has been listening to advice, and slowly, but surely, is getting to a balanced idea for a home system...

As for drivers, there are many good makes out there, and it all depends on personal tastes,as well as availability.

Personally, I am a real fan of the Audax HDA range, and I would never build another project without using the HD3P gold dome tweeter,as I think it is easily the best available from any manufacturer that I have heard, ( and also has no magnet- therefore ideal for HT use)..... Ducks and Covers ; )

::i see::

Griff my education is taken care of. It has been for quite a wile. I am interested in the driver manufactures you and Pinknoise have suggested. I will take a look at them. Could you guys post some links to their web sites? Well I am glad you guys are still hanging around and helping me out. By the way I will be using component video and I will try to keep my equipment closet as close to the projector as possible like you suggested Griff.

Thanks,
Slice

::Sorry::

Mr. feedback,
I know misspelling is an irritation. I am not sure what I have misspelled other then pinkmouse. I am sorry if it bothered you but just to let you know, I am dyslexic and I am trying my best. I am sorry that it bothers you so bad but no one else has complained. I would also like to know where else I have spelling errors. When I caught the “pinkmouse error” it was to late to edit. I am sorry.
Note: I get the idea that you don’t like me when you post because you tend to come through as really a mean guy that is bothered by the slightest error. I am sure you are not that type of person and I am sorry this error bothered you so much.

Sorry,
Slice

Hi Slice,

http://www.audax.com/ for details on the HD3P and other HDA drivers

Mrfeedback- maybe you are the one limited education, did your mother never tell you the first rule of social behavior- if you can''t say anything politely, don't say it at all.

Slice may have been young and inexperienced, but he has never been rude, unlike some people posting to this forum...
