From what I understand SLA batteries require some consideration towards venting when charging. I have a design leaving one, possibly two SLA batteries in an enclosure which for all intents and purposes could be considered airtight, however not all that well insulated so no heat worries for now. Size of this space is around 4x the volume of one reasonably sized battery (12v 7.2ah)
What kind of venting am I looking at? And would I address this in the same manner as passive airflow for heat or am I just aiming for a pressure escape for gasses?
Other electronic components will be housed in the same area and being a portable device it's prone to a drink spill or two, I don't want to be making openings where I don't have to - so something like a hole in the top would be less than ideal.. Solutions?

Is it a Boominator by any chance? If you don't charge too quick (0.1C) I wouldn't worry too much. A small hole would suffice to release the pressure, or you could mount one of these:

Thanks mate that will work out fine. Not really a Boominator but something portable I started throwing together with a bunch of leftovers
From what I understand, SLA batteries only vent when they are overcharged. This leads to (non-replaceable) water loss so is not good. I expect that if the charging current is modest and especially if the float voltage is temperature compensated then it would be okay to have some kind of pressure release valve on the enclosure that vents above several psi, similar to the rubber cell caps under the top cover of the SLA.
