skipping Yamaha CDR-S1000 "please help"
I started tweaking my CDP by replacing the power cord to a detachable (Cardas Quadlink 5C), installed IEC panel mount, BBC cones and dampen the case. After a week of listening, the disk started to skip then stop playing completely. First I though it was the disk itself. I tried different disk (new, old and copied) and it still do the same thing. Is the laser pick up the culprit? I cleaned the laser almost everyday and the problem still exist. The player is only about 4 years old and I want to save it. I'm also planning to upgrade to LClock someday. Is there anybody out there have a similar problem/solution???? I have the service manual and could read schematic. "Please help"

Some CD players are very sensitive to a type of power cable used. Some like tight neutral and phase cable twist, some are happy with loose phase and neutral twist. Usually, for digital sources you might need tighter twist. This is all to do with RF noise induced in power cable. Try different power cables!!!
You should also check if the IEC connector you installed is properly grounded to your CD player. Check the power cable ground lead as well! Then again, your CD player might not be grounded at all!!!
You mentioned that you have a service manual! There should be a section in your manual explaining how to enter TEST mode. In this mode you should be able to turn the laser ON, move pick-up along its rail, and adjust eye-pattern at RF test point. Some CD players have "auto-adjust" option... What type is your mechanism - who's the manufacturer - does it 'scan' the disk for reflectivity as soon as you insert the cd in to your player?
Also try to remember what you did exactly during modifications? Maybe you've done some silly mistake or you've forgotten something....

First of all, I want to thanked you for responding!
This weekend I removed the CDP cover, turn on the power. With the IDE cable disconnected, the disc spinning normally, the laser pick-up moved forward and back on its rails, then up and down. Looks like it trying to get a focus on the disc. This would take a few seconds (but longer than normal) then you could see the disc will spin very fast (the motor will wind-up loud) then just quit.
It seems to me that the laser pick up is worn out or need adjustment. I dont know who made the the CDR assembly. I could only see these number (V4836800) label on the side. The service manual only shows removal and replacement of the unit. There is provision for adjusting the laser pick up but the manual state not to make any adjustment at all and does not show how to make an adjustment. Is there's a standard way of adjusting laser pick up focus? Can I replaced the whole CDR mechanism with "Daisy laser"? I dont care about the re-writable capabilities of the player. That's why we have computer for! hehehe...

Have you done one of the clock upgrades (removed the xtal)?
If the answer is YES, you probably did not complete the job properly. CD player would do exactly what you described if it does not have a valid clock signal!
Check the ribbon cable that connects transport with main PC!

No... I haven't done any mod other than what I mentioned on the previous post.
I tried again this morning and miraculously it played the whole disc without any problem. Then, I put on the new disc that I just bought this weekend, you could hear the laser pick up moving, LED showing "READING DISC" then few seconds later the tray will opened. I spent hours going to all my disc. Most of my older disc will play, new disc (digitally remastered) will not play at all, brand new disc will play, majority of the copied disc will play then the sound becomes distorted, skipped and then just stop. I think the laser is too sensitive or out of focus.
1. What do you think about blackening (black marker) the surrounding area of the pick up?
2. Makes an adjustment, very small turn?
3. Do you think upgading the clock will help?

Clock upgrade IS NOT going to help.
You need to adjust the output from laser diode. Tur the little trim-pot 10 degrees ("5 min.") clockwise is probably going to be enough. I suggest you make a noticeable increase in clockwise direction of let's say - 30 degrees. If this works, go backwards 5 degrees at the time until it (player) starts having troubles reading disks. At this point, turn the pot 5 degrees clockwise and you are done.

Thank you for your help and sorry for not updating the post sooner. I did exactly what you told me to do and now the CD player works fine.
On the other subject, (I searched the forum but nothing comes close to being related to this...)
I removed the muting transistor on the analog output (total of 4) by cutting the wire. I dont hear the "clicks and pops" most people talking about when you first turn the power on. I attached a copy of the schematic just to make sure I removed the right ones. Also, my player has a digital output which according to the schematic also has a muting transistor. Can I remove this and have the same effects on sound quality? Please help..anybody!
