Anyone see any problem with these Subwoofers? 8inch.. Avalanche. I have been looking to make a DIRT CHEAP computer sound system.... they cost $14AU from Strathfield... and go for about $40AU on ebay... 😀 lol RRP is $29
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

At that price why not buy 2 and try them out.. lol 😀

Not too bad looking... lol I think I'l buy some when I get some money... 🙁 😛

how do you work out the cone area

cone area = pi * r^2 (a good enough approximation) - esp. when the cone is as shallow as the avalanche.

I reckon you can't go wrong for 8"....

Put it this way - the more practice one has on cheaper drivers, the better the result when it comes time for the more expensive ones.

BTW - measure diameter from outer edge of surround on one side to inner edge of surround on the other side (in other words, include 1/2 the surround roll on both sides in the diameter measurement).

Dave.

Dave gave the usual way to measure the cone diameter. Another way is just to assume, for drivers larger than 8", the cone diameter as being 1.5" less than the outside of the frame. So a 10" woofer has a cone diameter of 8.5" for example.

Cone area is not so important a spec to get right on the money. Perfectly useful ballpark figures are:

8" = 32 sq in
10"= 56 sq in
12"= 84 sq in
15"= 132 sq in

Also: Two 6.5" woofers approx equal the cone area of a 10"
Two 10" woofer equal approx the cone area of a 15"
