Single full range driver convert is born

just broke in a pair of 'classic 8's' full range drivers from audio nirvana line. 10x10x32 in tower, made per audio nirvana plans by a buddy, with 3 inch port in bottom front. I bought a cheap appj set amp on amazon for $230, rolled the tubes and it rates 3.5 wpc. using an inexpensive oppo cdp and simple 16 gage copper wire cables. so.... I have owned and heard great gear in my life, grew up in a house with grand pianos and full sized harps. have one at home now my mother the professional musician plays daily. well. i have never in my life heard such amazing reproduction of music! i want to let you guys know how cheap and amazing this approach is. forget specs, charts, pricetags, size, $$$ cables... this is something you need to hear to believe. this system plays all types of music with such emotional impact you will never go back, the one caveat is a crummy recording played after a great one will be glaringly obvious. but with a sacd or 24 bit cd etc. this system will re inspire you to just listen to music again. we forget what this is all about i think. for under $1000 i have world class midrange and impeccable highs and lush lows. many full range drivers to choose from so choose carefully. eg. fostex are not that great really but very common ntl.

will post some, great desigfns u have! a simple black piano gloss lacquer finish with a black 8 in driver near top and a 3 in hole afew inches from botton. nothing fancy really but matches the furniture and black gloss baby grand on side of it. go to common sense audio web to see pics

have not really searched for it like traditional speakers so i cannot give a specific answer tbh. they do sound great any where i sit, at that price just get them he has a 30 day guarantee and the bigger the box the better the sound. i went with the 1..3 liter mintower but he has a 2.8 liter box and a 1.75 liter bookshelf box that would make even go deeper. i have a bright room so i used mdf but birch will get you a sharper sound so. david is a good guy and i think he is just a music lover at heart so he is not real salesy but he is darn proud of his drivers and for the money and quality you just cannot go wrong! this is my first forary into this stuff but i owned crossover less meadowlark kestral 2's and an upgraded jolida 60 wpc tube amp and this set up is vastly superior in detail and speed an decay. they really require a quality signal and then they just soar.

Hi,

Like everything, give it time. Good (monitor) speakers change
the most with the recording and are almost chameleon like.

Impressive speakers colour all recordings, and generally
suit certain recordings, and not much the rest, YMMV.

For sure you don't have :
"world class midrange and impeccable highs and lush lows"

Long term listening will reveal that not to be true.

rgds, sreten.

Nothing against 8" FR's other than unrealistic expectation.

well excuse me but i live with a piano and pedal harp in the same room and if you are unable to accept my experience than so be it. i listen to art blakey smash cymbals and they ring like any great teater will sound. i played drums personally so i just think you do not want to accept it. good luck. you could read some reviews possibly. the midranges are killers..even reviews go that far. but if earth is flat i cant change that i know what i hear, they call me tin ears for a reason.

i went with the 1..3 liter mintower but he has a 2.8 liter box and a 1.75 liter bookshelf box that would make even go deeper.

Like many of the ANs this driver does not go that low in a nicely aligned vented box.

David Dick's boxes do not extract the best from these.

Using the factory data, abox between 20-25 litres models as close to optimum IMO. In 20 litres F3 on the order of 80Hz, F10 60 Hz. With larger boxes BR alignments start getting ugly.

Someone else will need to look at ML-TLs (likely what the minitower is), but the low Q is not optimum fora TL.

using an online calculator i wound up at 20 liters. tbh tho i just do not know about anything any longer. all i know is i have been right there listening to organic instruments my whole life and did my own voice over recording as well and i love the sound i am hearing. at this price and simplicity i am blown away. i cannot get over the bs gear heads buy into, me included for yrs. these drivers cover it all and do so very musically and compelling. even symphony halls have different effects and rooms etc are always part of it and changing. so....

so if you really like the sound these are delivering to you right now, that's great - those of us who haven't heard your system or watched the smile on your face can get stuffed - but don't be surprised if the honeymoon doesn't last forever

why this anger? i dont say get stuffed nor imply it. and what is with this 'just wait business'?. man talk about a negative fellow. i've been around the block and am new to this site...and you are the second post i get that is angry sounding. i think this site attarcts a lot of unhappy people.. i ran a sterophile test cd thru it and it produced exlnt results other than a loss of bottom end after 45 or so but it plays a low g on a bass fiddle with drama and precision and emotion and the highs were as high as i could lisen to. i was just trying to say i too had been chasing gear for yrs and i found a simple cheap curative. i think i am gonna cut my ties with this group. the moderator is a cool guy tho.

Hey veroman,
You might want to reread chrisb's post. I don't see the anger. He was saying that without hearing your system, his opine isn't 100% valuable and to be cautious, as many times what starts out great sours quickly. It happens to me all the time. Especially with speakers. Everyone here is happy that your system sounds good, that's what it's all about. Relax a little.

Cheers.

nah, i am tired of type A guys making up the bulk of some of these audio sites. i owned kestral 2's and was happy for long time... never thought of selling but forced to sell. i get it completely. just wait long enough and you will change your mind..nice. you have to manage these guys so take er easy pardner, i will just mosey on. . i saw some other nice guys here too but i wish you and the site well.

yep give em a try. but dont tell anyone on this site if they sound amazing, i am goona take a sabatcle on these forums. i ride a front wheel drive recubent bike and it is amazing but traditional hard core bikers think it must be a horrible thing and knock it. same with tiny set amps and frdrivers in a ported box... just cuts against the tradition. oddly 50 yrs ago was some state of the art frdrivers and tube amps that played tommy dorsey for the old timers to enjoy.

thanx Cal - I'm not sure whether I intended this as an example of the hazards of mis-reading a post or not (let those among us innocent of that offense cast the first stone, etc) - it obviously took someone who understands my peculiar sense of the sardonic to parse that I meant that WE (- those of us who don't get how / why you're enjoying something we haven't heard) should be the ones to "get stuffed"

my erstwhile friend Ed Schilling might well phrase things more graphically and anatomically 😉

edit: veroman, don't vacate yourself from the fora based on a few posts like those above - I've only had the opportunity to hear one example of an AN system (must be at least 6yrs ago?), and it might not have been quite optimally configured, but I've heard far worse at hobbyist get togethers and some costing much more at shows like VSAC.

What happened to the guy with this enthusiasm?
this is something you need to hear to believe.
You don't walk away because others have a different opinion do you? Variety is spice, opinions are just that. Personally I'm really happy for you. It would have saved me a dollar or two along the way if I was content with one system as you are at this point. Consider yourself lucky.
Cheers.
