Has anyone simulated the behaviour of a membrane with for example finite element analysis?
I like to do so. Any software packages out there (preferable open source) that can do the job? Or do I have to write my own?

The equivalent air mass being added to membrane mass being significant, you will need 3D finite element analysis. Which makes it more complex.
I have started a more simple approach, a simple excel sheet, with this unique target: compute the resonance frequency.
falstad.com might have what your looking for.jer
Indeed the membrane simulation is interesting (http://www.falstad.com/membrane/).
This corresponds to:
u(x, y, t) = Sum on m ( Sum on n ( Cm,n * sin(√(m^2 + n^2)ct) * sin(mx) * sin(ny) ) )
oublie, thanks for that link. I had found it a while back ,then I lost it and couldn't find it again. jer
