Simulating DML Shapes

I recognize that I am incredibly naive concerning any kind of performant audio, so please forgive me if I use terms incorrectly.

I would like to try and simulate different shapes for some distributed mode loudspeakers. I'd love to learn more about wave propagation, sound, and speakers in the process with the ideal end goal that I could use anevolutionary_algorithm to procure arbitrary shapes with little need for equalization.

I have a background in software engineering, so, for the most part, I can handle all those parts, but I am struggling to be able to know the terminology around the space for searching effectively.

I found this paper which suggests that they simulated the panels. I may be misunderstanding something, but here are my questions:

1. What would a simulation for this be called? (solid wave simulation?)
2. What kind of a tool could I use to simulate this sort of a thing?
3. What is the name of the science/math that represents this phenomenon?
4. Where can I learn more about DML in general?
5. Where can I learn more about all the terms used in these forums? (I want to better understand how I could discuss the possible traits of a device after reading specs)

Thanks for your time. I've had a good deal of fun lurking on this site.
