I thought it was an interesting concept, but I too would use a relay to ensure negligible distortion.I would like more simple protection with a relay 🙂

I may be missing something, but why not switch the low side of the speaker. No need for the optocoupler, just drive the fets straight from the protection circuitry.
Of course, you can't bridge the amps but so long as that's understood, happy days.
