Why not just use a resistor and diode? With proper selection of parts and supply voltage, it would charge nice and fast at low charge and slow down as it gets to full charge.

you're absolutely right about the simplicity (and efficiency) of your solution. The idea here was to allow recycling wall-warts I and friends of mines already have, without bothering too much about their voltage (9, 10, 12, 13V should equally work without troubles) at the expense of two additional components easy to find=around 1 euro. I'm so tired of buying transformers for building such simple things. The only aspect of my circuit that bothers me is the idea purchasing the zener, since I already have in multiple quantities all the rest...
