Someone asked me about a silvertone replacement speaker for his silvertone guitar. He has this telecaster-ish guitar with the amp and speaker built into a thin rectangular case.
The speaker distorts, crackles, when turned up. Are there ready replacements for these, has anyone had any luck rebuilding or reconing these?

if he wants an original silvertone speaker, he needs to find somebody selling them (like on ebay or a vintage amp parts web site), or have it reconed (probably about $20 for a 10" spkr with i'm guessing a maximum of a 50 watt voice coil).
This is maybe a 6" Alnico driver, built into the guitar case, with a transformer mounted.
I know what needs to be done, wondering if anyone knows where to find a replacement or what the typical failures are?? I haven't bothered to take it apart yet...

one failure that would cause this problem is a simple fix...
the surround wires (spider wires) sometimes break at the terminals. you can bridge the break with small size solder wick. it sometimes breaks at the cone, and that requires very careful soldering. nut most often it breaks at the terminals. apply 1.5V from a battery (with the speaker disconnected from the amp) and wiggle the surround wires. if this causes a cracle or a pop, fix the wire.
