I intend to wind my output transformer using silver solid core or plated wire. Any one know where I can find readily insultate siver wire that i can use for tranformer winding?
Any other experiences sharing would also be appreciated/

it' cheaper to use only silver plated wire because the performances are almoust the same. and electrons flow only on the surface of the conductor.
usually silver-plated wires are used in RF frequencies because of theyr low resistance.
you could do yourself some silver-plated wire using the tecnique i'll describe here.
you need:
1. copper wire the size(length and diameter) you need
2. some CuSo4 solution (you can find this at chemical supply stores)
3. an old silver coin or any other silver thing.
4. a supply source (12v 5A should be enough)
all the isolation laquer shold come down from the wire. a easy wat to do this is to put some high current flow into the wire, heating the wire and destroying the laquer.(or just burn it with a flame).
then, with a abrasive paper clean the wire.
after this is done, make a solution of CuSo4 (10-30% concentration) in a plastic recipient (if it is from steel it will react with the solution)
wind the copper in a diameter a bit larger than the coin you have.
the positive electrode should connect to the wire and the negative electrode should connect to the silver coin.(i don't remember quite well, but the electrons flow from - to + ... I think)
put the ansamble inisde the CuSo4 solution.
you have to watch for the silver to be on equal deposit on the wire surface. eventualy change the position of the coin.
after you consider you have enough siler on the wire(about 10-30 min) take of the wire and wait for it to dry. with a very smooth abrasive paper clean the wire.(don't waste the silver, it's not very cheap!)
a silver coin would be enogh for several times to use.
with this metod you can deposit silver on copper wires. the only problem is that you have to be carefull when you are winding the transformer not to make short-circuits. this wire is not isolated.
it's not hard, but after a few times, you'l do it the way you wish.

Considering the low price of silver-plated copper wire, I don't understand the reason to DIY unless you needed some particular formulation or thickness that wasn't available commercially. It's neat, just not terribly useful. Especially in the case of a transformer, where you need hundreds of feet of *insulated* wire.
Now, where this little trick might come in handy is silver-plating bus bars or other components that come in Cu but might be desirable plated.

well, here you cannot find insulated plated silver wires...
so you must do-it yourself.
indeed, this trick does-nt work for undreds of feets of wire, but for a transmission line of 10 cm is ok.
I never taught of the purity of the silver you have to use...

Try California Fine Wire. I purchased a roll of 24 AWG teflon coated 99.99% silver wire from them for about US$1.20 per foot. The teflon coating, for its part, is thin and possibly thin enough for use in transformer winding (oooh!). California Fine Wire can coat silver wire with pretty much any coating to your specifications.

This is the same wire used in the Audio Note U.K. Ag wire OPT/xformers among others:
DESKADEL.
Look under "Accessories".
If the diameter you're looking for isn't on the list it can be ordered straight from the factory.
The man behind the operation, mr. De Laet is travelling extensively so be patient or look at the dealer list on the same site.
The Ag should be of 5 N purity at least so coin silver is no good.
Neither is Ag plated Cu as it doesn't yield the same sonic results, nor is jeweler silver for that matter.
BTW, the wire is cryogenically treated directly at the factory directly before spooling.

Thank you for the timely suggestions. I think i can live with silver plated readily insulated wire if that is available. I am not confident that I have the knowledge to do my own plating however.

I called them today to price a pound of a particular alloy and about fell out of my chair when he came back with a quote of $336.28.
Seems they're really only set up to sell really small quantities and to figure the price for something like a pound they just take the per foot price and multiply it by the number of feet per pound for the particular wire. At least that's what their sales guy told me.
A pound of the same alloy sells elsewhere for about 1/10th the price they quoted.

Haha, I had the same expriences too. try here I think I am going back to Hong Kong in this summer. If you find some place with shipping difficulty, I may be able to help you out haha. Maybe I can also borrowing tools from you in Hong Kong to build an amplifier for my dad hehe. He will open his mouth with a hole on it when an $60-100 value amplifier sounds better than his system.
P.S: Man, the air ticket to HK is so damn expensive this summer. It will cost me more than 1k to go back to Hong Kong. Damn it.
