In a nutshell, only black anodising is suitable on a loudspeaker cone, and it should have been made at the Factory (hint hint, they might custom do one pair for you) before speaker assembly, now it´s too late.
Not kidding, only kind of "paint" I might find acceptable is the very thin and light provided by black permanent felt marker ink.
I think you may well be right. Is there a way to acquire the stuff used in permanent markers or do you have a brand/trade name for it?
As I said time to think or ultimately abandon the particular design I had in mind.

Why not just buy a (better) black alu driver?
SB Acoustics :: 8" SB23NBACS45-4
Like most other alternatives it fails for a number of reasons.
The price is at least double, it is 4Ω, the parameters do not fit intended use.
Ultimately I do not care what material the cone is made of as long as it is not silver in colour.
In the end if I would have been able to find a viable alternative I would not have asked the question. 🙂
And there was me thinking you hadn't even entertained my brilliant idea.....🙂 Perhaps I didn't sell it hard enoughI think you may well be right. Is there a way to acquire the stuff used in permanent markers or do you have a brand/trade name for it?
Even jokes need a hard sell sometimes! 🙂
But if it is possible to acquire the stuff they use in marker pens in conjunction with an 8" round grill it might actually be feasible.

Just googled (well duckduckgo'd) it and there are marker pen refills!
I didn't know they exist and until JMFahey mentioned it never thought it might be available at all!
Yay, back in the game!!!
And again thanks to all who participated in my foolish endeavour!
PS: Might have to take a deep breath and actually buy something through amazon though because Staples only lists refills for whiteboard markers which really shouldn't be permanent. I remember getting into trouble in school for substituting whiteboard markers with permanent ones.

Admittedly I was thinking of the very wide, soft marker pen and directly applied. BTW, I wouldn't take a deep breath unless you had time to kill and were in a very safe environment 😉
A deep breath in Birmingham is indeed a bad idea.
I've heard living here is equivalent to smoking 20 a day!
Luckily I would have to take the deep breath before the order arrives or it would be more like sniffing glue. I usually and successfully avoid using Amazon for obvious reasons. I bought 3 items from them in my entire live so far.

Not all permanent marker inks are equal.
I've used marker pens to conceal marks on audio equipment and, although some dry a deep black, others result in a purplish sheen.
As JMFahey says, test first!

Always Galu always! 🙂
I've had quite black marker pens and others varied from purplish, as you said, to brown.

Permanent marker refills are available in almost any office supply store.
I use German made Edding ink with great success.
Yes, some cheaper "black" inks are actually bluish or brownish hue if thinned, but add an extra thin layer or two and they "become black as intended".
I suggested an airbrush as the perfect tool, but if they are to be used behind a semi transparent grill, even hand applied felt marker might work.
Of course, if looked at without visual interference you will notice the "artist´s hand" .
I have used Edding markers to "visually kill" annoying aluminum domes behind grills ; but I guess your cones will stand in the open.
PS: in case somebody thinks I was joking with this suggestion: not at all.

Well scottjoplin undersold his marker pen suggestion hence my assumption of it being a joke but you gave so much detailed info that it never crossed my mind. 🙂

It is very difficult to give you advice when you do not describe your project ("fails for a number of reasons" is not much to go by)
Anyway, the SB woofers come in both 4 and 8 ohm variants
Ok here goes:
Price about £40-50
Needs to work in a sealed cab of around 30L and give a useful boost of 2-3dB at around 70Hz when ported in the same cab.
8Ω since I intend to use it active with cheap LM3886 chip amps.
The idea is to have a speaker with two characters: sealed for normal listening, ported for parties.
