Almost 20 years after first joining here I finally set up a "signature" line the other day. I thought that would show up as I've seen many times at the bottom of other's posts and replies. It doesn't.

Signature is appended to new messages, not retro-added to old messages.
This message has my new trivial "signature", but you won't find it on any of my old messages (and probably not too many future messages).

If I read the dates right (if I know when today is), that may be old re: your sig setting?

Yes, I have checked and indeed as member PRR has mentioned, there is no retro on the sig lines, unlike the left margin info.
Posts and sigs are cached for performance, sigs are not updated in the cache of each post in real time, only during cache recreation which is periodic (or manual).
